Admiral Daala stepped onto the bridge of her new ship and took a moment to breath in the air. Her new command. She had yet to decide whether this was a good or bad thing, but she would make the most of it.

“Captain.” She said, addressing a smallish man of that almost looked like he hadn’t eaten in a month. “I want a full systems failure drill performed in an hour, with the results on my desk for review following. Schedule individual system failure drills for every system at four hour intervals, to be conducted till every system has been covered.”
“Yes Admiral. Is there any particular order you would like them in?”
“No, I’m going to leave that decision up to you. Just be certain that you cover them all.”

It was important to select the right information. She would, of course, not hide anything, not that there was anything to hide, but wording was important.

There had, unfortunately, been no battle, despite what had been expected. While many would have called that a success, Daala had no doubt the Killiks would try something again in the future, a show of the Empires power would have provided the bugs a reason to reconsider that decision in the future. Unfortunately, they would have to hope the treaty would last.

Between then and now, not much had happened. She had waited in the system to ensure that the Killiks had pulled out, and then proceeded to Coruscaunt before coming to Kuat. She was now having her new crew perform drills, drills which had mostly gone well thus far, and she intended to have the remaining ships in her task force perform the same drills as soon as the Vituperative had finished, if Admiral Taggart had no objections and if time allowed.

She finished the report, and had it sent to the Admirals ship to wait for him as requested, just in time for the ships internal communications systems to announce that a hull breach drill was in progress near the main reactor. She would look forward to seeing the drills results.

James walked silently along the bridge of the ESD Dark Confidant, looking over the crew-pits. He liked the bridge of the ship. It was nearly twice the size of the Akula's bridge. He liked the new ship, in every way, except for the vunerable bridge. The Akula's bridge was inset deep within the ship. The Executor's bridge was out in the open.

Still looking over the crew-pits, his datapad beeped. Looking at it, he nodded in approval. Admiral Daala had gotten her report to him quicker than expected. Moving to the command room, he sat down behind the massive table, and accessed the report. He was dissapointed that there wasn't an actual battle, but he guessed a victory was a victory. His confrontation with the DWRP went about the same.

Closing that report, he pulled up a fleet roster, and was happy to see that Cartos was there. He would make things a bit easier. All in all the crews, and ships fit the fleet perfectly. The rebels would never expect an attack as ferocious as this fleet could deliver. Smileing to himself yet again, he thought of all the ways the Fifth Fleet could cripple the rebels.

As James sat behind the large table in the command room, he pulled up his list of priorities. The systems checks had been completed on his ship, and every other ship in the fleet. Failure drills, weapon tests, shield tests. Every ship had passed. Now came the interesting part.

He had his orders. He had had them for a long time. The time to attack was coming soon, and he was still suprised. After more than seven years of strained peace, the first shot would be fired, and the galaxy would yet again be thrown into chaos, saturated in the blood of the warriors of each side. Fathers, mothers, sons, daughters. They all fought, and died the same, and at the end of the day, all that was left was the victor, standing tall above the lifeless corpses of the enemy. It was strange. Right before, and after a battle, the thought of taking another being's life was reprehensable, but in the midst of battle, in the middle of the explosions, the yelling, and screaming, one didn't think about killing. One didn't think of the family of the man, or woman he just killed. One didn't think of the children who cried themselves to sleep at night, knowing they would never see their mother or father again. But now, in the planning stages of the battle, he thought about it, and it made him sick.

Standing up, James made his way to the refresher just off the room, and splashed a bit of water on his face. He couldn't think about the horrors of war now. He needed to prepare the men, and women under his command, so that they could go back to their families. If they saw that he was nervous, or shaken, then their confidence would be shaken as well, and their performance in battle poor. He couldn't have that.

Looking into the mirror, he disliked what he saw. He was pale, and had bags under his eyes. He looked terrible. Making a mental note to catch at least a few hours of sleep after he issued his orders, he made his way into the command room, and sat behind the table again, activating his com-pannel. Entering the channel-freq for Admiral Daala, he waited until the channel resolved itself.

"Sir?"

"Admiral Daala, I've reviewed your reports. Very informative. I need you to prepare your men, and ship for battle. I'll also want a full report on your task force's readiness," said Taggart, as he reached for the control switch. "Taggart, out."

Shutting down the com, he stood up, straightened his uniform, and made his way to his quarters. His nightmares would still haunt him, but he needed sleep more than he needed mental comfort.

“Yes sir.” She said as the transmission faded. Her own ships drills had gone well, though not as well as she would have liked. Hopefully, there would be enough time to run through all the drills she wanted rerun. She headed for the main bridge and signaled for the Captain.

“Admiral?”
“Captain Kahn, I have here a list of drills I want run again. See to it they are done, and see too it that they are done better.”
“Yes Ma’am.”

That done, she established contact with the ships of the second task force and provided them all with a schedule of drills they were to run. The fleet would only work as well as its worst ship, and she had no intention of her ships holding that dishonor.

"I don't care, James. I don't care anymore. You do whatever in the hell you want, I'm leaving," said Faith, tears in her eyes.

James looked at her, uncomprehending. "I did this for us. If my transfer is approved, I can get a nice desk job, on Coruscant, and we can settle down together, have a family... Live a real life. Don't leave, when you don't want to... Let's talk about this."

Turning on her heel, Faith looked James squarly in the eyes, and said, "Oh.. Talk now? You want to talk about it now after you already went and requested the transfer!? Did you even consider, for one moment that I want to stay on Corellia? That I don't want to move to that filth ridden planet? No... You didn't. Goodbye, James."

James stood there, wondering how he would get her back. He went, and stood at the window overlooking the busy speeder avenue. A few seconds later, he saw Faith's speeder appear out of it's dock, and speed off into the sky. It didn't get far, and James watched in horror, as another speeder collided with hers at a junction, both errupting into a giant ball of flame, and wreckage.

James opened his eyes, and quickly closed them again, running his hands over his sweat-soaked hair. The dream didn't come often... It only came right before a battle. Sitting upright, he sat there for a few minutes, trying to clear the images of his wife's death from his head. If he could go back, and change it, he would've quit his career in the Empire, rather than requested a transfer. He would give anything he had just to be with Faith once more, to have one more embrace, one more kiss.

Shaking his head, he tried to clear the thoughts completly. He couldn't dwell on the past, his dreams, or anything else but battle, strategy, force deployment. He had a planet to take, and Grand Admiral Treshan would not accept any poor performance from the task force. Standing up, he made his way to the shower, and quickly washed, before jumping back out, and dawning his uniform.

Making his way over to his table, he picked up his datapad. The time for attack was approaching quickly, and he still had one more thing to do. Making his way out of his quarters, and to the bridge, he moved towards his comm-officer, and said, "Lieutenant, establish a connection with Strike Force Omega, on a secure channel."

"Aye sir," said the Lieutenant, as he took the steps to establish communications, and encrypt the channel.

"Done."

"Good," said Taggart, waiting for the face of Skirata, or Scyntor to appear. The communications officer's face appeared, and Taggart said, "Patch me through to Admiral Skirata's personal comm."

He waited for a few seconds, and then the face of Kal appeared, looking worn, and haggard, darkened by the low lighting in the room. Taggart waited a few seconds, and said, "Admiral Skirata, I have new orders for you. Strike Force Omega is to make best speed to Kuat immediatly. I'll brief you, and General Scyntor when you arrive. Taggart out."

Motioning to his communications officer, he cut the channel, and made his way to his command room. Admiral Cartos would be arriving soon, and he wanted to speak with him for a while before the upcoming battle. According to the reports, and his own observations, the man was a tactical genious. He would be able to utilize the man's abilities very effectively on the upcoming battle.

General-Admiral Ferdinand Cartos strode into the bridge of the Potestatem, to be greeted by the faces of the crew that had piloted it through his career. He smiled to each familiar visage, then clasped his hands behind his back. His sunglasses glinted in the light, his voice with the comfortable ring of authority that had long since been absent. "Captain, is my flagship ready?" The formal question was asked, a tradition rarely enforced in today's Navy... but as Thrawn had taught him, tradition was all you had.

"The Potestatem is fully at your command, Admiral." The formal reply was just as heartfelt as it ever had been. He looked at Captain Pierce with a smile touching his lips, and bowing his head once turned to the comm station.

"Communications, set up a secure link to the bridge of the Dark Confidant. Scramble code Csilla-42 - Admiral Taggart will understand." He smiled as the crew took in the orders, strange as it was, without pause. He had worked so long with them they were tuned to his idiosyncrasies, as he was to theirs. "Communications established, sir."

Cartos turned, straightening his black tie and suit jacket before facing the holoscan fully. He smiled and snapped to attention, his fingertip brushing the top of his sunglasses. "Admiral Taggart. General-Admiral Ferdinand Cartos reporting for duty. Task Force 1 stands ready."

The Admiral dropped the salute and assumed a parade rest as the ships of his force milled about in their tasks, practicing the designated maneuvers and synchronizing with the Potestatem's central computer, as well as the visual coding system he had designated.

James frowned at the man. According to his comm-tech, the transmision from Cartos was coming from the Gauntlet-class Star Destroyer Potestatem. James narrowed his eyes slightly, and said, "Admiral Cartos, you seem to be aboard the wrong ship. Grand Admiral Treshan, and I assigned you to the Dominator-class Super Star Destroyer Dominator. Not the Potestatem."

James paused for a second as his sensor officer came to stand just out of range of the hologram projector, hands clasped behind his back, waiting to be addressed.

He then said in a tone that conveyed complete authority, and made it clear that there was no room for debate, "You are to transfer to the Dominator, and then give me your status report on your arrival. Taggart, out."

James was aware that the Postatem had been Cartos' command ship since his promotion to the Admirality, but he didn't care about the man's preference for crew, or ship. His orders needed to be followed. Turning to his sensor's tech, the man moved in front of James, and gave a salute. He returned the salute, and said, "At ease, Lieutenant. Report."

"Aye sir. Admiral.. I picked up the Victory-class III Star Destroyer Pillar of Winter on our scanners a minute ago. It exited hyperspace, and has moved inside Strike Force Omega's formation. The transponder the ship is broadcasting is genuine, but I have no records on the ship."

James had heard of it, but only by rumor. He'd never been officially briefed on it's existance. Apparently the ship carried some kind of top secret super-weapon, but that was still just rumor. Making a mental note to request the clearance for the files on the ship from Grand Admiral Treshan, James looked at the man, and said, "Don't worry about it, Lieutenant."

"Aye sir," replied the man, as he made his way back to the crew pit. He then sat in his black leather command chair, on the bridge, speculating as to just what was on the Pillar of Winter.

Cartos only smiled tightly... transfer from the Postestatem? They were delusional. He slipped a datacard into a reader and send it over the command frequency. "With all due respect, Admiral Taggart, I have procured a permissions from High Command to retain command of the Potestatem as my command vessel. As it stands, my fleet is currently in holding pattern Alpha-5 and awaiting orders."

He heard the navigational team come up with the Pilliar of Winter's transponder and listened to their tense tones as they could not cross-reference the signal with the Imperial archives. "Do not concern yourselves with the ship - if it were Rebel it would have attacked or been destroyed by now. Prepare yourselves with the orders I have left until this mission gets underway."

He relaxed as he looked out over the bridge at the four massive Dominator-class Command Ships moving into their position, inhaling deeply. They thought he was insane not to take the largest ship for his command, but the crew he had functioned best with this vessel, and there was more to a command ship than size alone. Another smile passed his lips... Taggart would find out just what the crew was made of after their first battle together.

James sat, frowning at Cartos' message. High Command did not inform him of that detail. He would let Cartos have his ship, and his crew for now, but if the man disobeyed another order, especially one on the battle-field, Taggart would have him shot.

Turning his attention to his datapad, he noticed he had another message. Decrypting it, he sat back in his chair, yet again, and read the continous orders from High Command.

Alex heard the man's message, acknowledged it, and stuffed his comlink back in his suit. Smoothing over the wrinkles in his combat-uniform, he double-checked the vibro-sword sheathed on his back, and made his way to the turbo-lift on the deck.

Alex had read the profile on the man several times. He was cold, calculating, and supposedly a genious when it came to space warfare. His record credited that bit to training extesively under Thrawn. Alex wondered what the man was like in person. He often found that those of high intelligence, and power were often arrogant, and thought they were above those under their command in every way. He would reserve judgment until he met with Cartos.

As the turbo-lift came to a stop, Alex stepped out into the corridor leading to the bridge, made sure his uniform was still in order, and stepped onto the bridge. Spotting Cartos, he made his way up to the man, and stopped short. He then came to attention, and snapped a crisp salute, saying, "Sir, First Lieutenant Alex Torr, IntelForce Assault, reporting as ordered."

"Sir," said the communications officer from the crew pit, "We're recieving a message from Grand Marshal Jax on an encrypted channel."

James looked up from his reports, and said, "Understoosd, send it to the command room." As he stood, he wondered what the Grand Marshal wanted right before the attack. Most likely implimenting another of his plans. Entering his command room, he pulled up the comm, and entered his security clearances. Seconds later he was speaking to the Grand Marshal, and the man's plan was most interesting.

Cartos sat in the battle bridge, refurbished in his own personal tastes. It was not like the utilitarian bridge of the Empire, but was more like an art gallery than anything else. Currently the room was filled with holoscans of Kuati art, ranging from five thousand years pre-empire date to one given to the Empire not two weeks previous. He smiled as he turned to Alex Torr of the Imperial IntelForce. "Please, have a seat."

Cartos stood from the command chair and proferred a seat on a portable stool as he seated himself before a sculpture of a waterfall dating over a thousand years old, next to the navigation console. His sunglasses reflected the lights from overhead, the tubes specially requested by the Admiral for ease on the eyes as well as improved morale: as close to natural light as could be gotten in deep space. "I have reviewed your personell file, and I must say I am rather impressed with your credentials. Several years in Imperial Intelligence, and top of your class in the inagural IntelForce training regimen, directed by none other than Grand Marshal Jax." Cartos nodded slightly, his face betraying no hint of emotion.

His fingers steepled as he reclined in the navigational chair, head dropping slightly. "I understand you are to be coordinating a small group of IntelForce troopers aboard my ship for the upcoming mission. I would ask you what you feel personally about being sent to my command, and specifically your reaction when you realized you were not to be transfered to the Dominator, but this ship."

Cartos watched the Commander intently, missing no nuance of reaction. The Admiral's body was relaxed, totally at ease and totally in control of the situation.

An interesting question to ask, thought Alex, as he looked the man in the eyes, or as much as he could with the man's non-regulation glasses. Alex briefly thought about Swali, who also had a tendancy to do such things, but pushed the thought to the back of his mind in an instant. There was obviously no use in lying, or altering his answer to the Admiral to what he thought would be a more favored response.

Considering the question fully, Alex said, "Sir, before traveling here, I read your file, and before that, I heard of your exploits. Word among the Empire is that you're Thrawn's protige, the one man he chose to take an intrest in. I've reviewed your strategies, and although my interest lies more on the battlefield, and inside enemy camps, your methods seem highly efficient. As to my reaction on your choice of ship, I can only assume that you have a good reason for it. Perhaps preference of crew, the fondness of this class of ship, it's meaningless to speculate."

Pausing, he asked, "If I may ask, what are your reasons for turning down command of the Dominator?"

Cartos smiled inwardly, careful to allow no trace of it to appear on his face. An interesting way to start a conversation indeed... most officers wouldn't question the command they were placed in. This one showed intelligence and a certain... tenacity that would prove advantageous in the upcoming mission.

"You are right, of course... it is meaningless to speculate." Cartos leaned back, seeming to draw Torr in while at the same time keeping his own distance, both physically and mentally. Cartos' shielded eyes took in the features of the Commander before him. Trained well in the art of deception and concealment, nevertheless a subtle tightening of the muscles around the outsides of his eyes, and a very slight glistening of sweat at his temple told the Admiral that he was ill at ease with answering such questions directly.

"You are most clever at throwing the line of questioning off, Commander Torr. In respect for that ability, I shall answer your question before re-stating mine." Cartos rose and walked towards a bank of holoprojectors, pressing a small button on a datapad in his pocket. The scultures and flatwork vanished, leaving a high-resolution scan of the sapace before them, overlaid not with images of ships but rows of letters and numbers: transponder signatures, classifications, and operational statuses.

"My reasons for chosing the Potestatem without regard to the superiority of the Dominator lie in one of the first teachings I learned from Grand Admiral Thrawn. He showed me the benefit of using a smaller ship as command because, with the right combination of subterfuge and tact, it could be completely overlooked by the enemy and allow a much greater precision of attack. Think of it: if all the ships are headed for your flagship, how much of the battle can you truly see?" He did not turn to face Torr, but lifted a small cylinder from his pocket and twirled it between his fingertips. The viewpanel changed to a full technical readout of the Potestatem's systems.

A readout in green indicated performance higher than Imperial standard, and in red a deficiency. He waited for Torr to look at the viewpanel to realize that the ship, a seemingly derelict Gauntlet-class Destroyer was operating at 15% higher efficiency than standard. In the fields of navigation and coordination, the numbers were excessive: close to 40 percent. Cartos smiled as he rolled his shoudlers back, relaxing.

"The Potestatem has been in my command since it was fist christened. It was Thrawn's flagship for a short time, then it became the flagship of the first task force of his second tour in the Unknown Regions. The crew has always served under me, ever since I was a Commander. I have worked with them extensively, had the lowest turnover rate of any ship in the Empire, so they all know me as if I was a brother. It is for that reason, Commander Torr, that I will accept no other ship. This crew is my family, and I will forsake for no man, and no other ship."

Cartos turned, his voice impassioned, but his face like stone. "So now, Commander Torr, I ask you again. What is your reaction to my decision to remain aboard an outclassed vessel, ancient by Imperial standards, rather than choosing the strongest in the fleet?" His eyes searched every nuance of the Intelligence Officer's face, his knuckles white as they gripped one another behind his back.

"I think it doesn't matter how outdated a ship is. If you can utilize it more effectively than you can the Dominator, then I see no other course but to agree with your choice," said Torr. He wasn't sure as to what the man meant by his reaction. His reaction was irrelevent. As long as he could perform his duty correctly, the ship he served on did not matter.

Cartos nodded very slightly as he turned to a running report of the Galactic Communications. He smiled very slightly at the reaction his words got, and only shook his head at the Supreme Moff's words. He clicked it off as he faced Torr again, hands clasping easily.

"Once again you evade me, Commander Torr. If you are this nervous about giving me your honest opinion, then I shall drop it. In the meantime, I would like you to assemble your troops in the hangar bay for my review at 0500 tomorrow. I shall be very interested in seeing how the Grand Marshal did. Dismissed."

A shuttle dropped out of hyperspace within range of the Fourth Systems Force and the Abandon Hope a quick burst transmision was immediatly broadcast to the DSD and then relayed to Admiral Daala's flagship, the prosphetic laden hologram of Admiral Shadowsun flickered into beeing "Admirall...it...is..a pleasure to be assigned to your taskforce." the shuttle banked and began its approach into the Abandon Hopes hanger.

"I am now taking my place on...the..bridge..." his respirators slowed causing him to cough and weeze "of the 'Abandon', with your blessing of course.

Shadowsun has taken command of the fourth systems force under Admiral-General Daala

“Of course.” Daala replied. “I have had the ships of the Second Task Force run drills. The results of the ships of the Fourth Systems Force should be available for you. I want you to take a look at them and have the ships repeat any drills that they did not do in sufficient time. That is all.”

With that, the communications ceased.

Shadowsun nodded slightly to the hologram and read the latest holonet comms for high command, a smille spread beneath his respirator and he called up the reports from his force...the Abandon Hope's crew were battle ready to the highest of Admiral Daala's standards...not high enough for him, there were allways miniscule failures in each drill that slipped through. There wasn't enough time to run through tests if the latest comms were to be read correctly...he weezed and opened comms with the Conqueror and the Vanquisher images of their Captains

"Admiral," they saluted

He returned the gesture "By now you will have surely recieved the same messages from high command, ready your ships, perform all final system checks...recall your fighter units." he clasped his arms behind his back "Ready for the command to jump." he nodded to the communications officer who cut the transmission and turned his attention to his own Captain "Captain Sayne, prepare the ship for battle." he glanced out at the bulbus gravity well projectors and opened up a voice only comm to Admiral Daala "Admiral do you have any standing orders?"

Cartos frowned slightly, then turned to the communications console. He read through the most recent of the reports, and inhaled deeply. He held no trace of relish in his thoughts - battle was not a place to be enjoyed. Cartos nodded to himself once, then brought his back straight as he keyed in the command frequency for the First Force. Seeing a slight delay in response times, he waited a while until all of the communication lights showed green, then spoke softly.

"Good day, ladies and gentlemen. This is Admiral Cartos, transmitting to the whole of the First Task Force. Our time is upon us, ladies and gentlemen. Captains, I want your last reports over the excercises run in the past twenty-four hours - performance, timing, and any issues you may have come across. Admirals, I want you to transfer to the Potestatem for briefing in two hours. And to all crew members aboard all vessels... get a good night's sleep. Cartos out."

He pulled a deep breath as he sat back. He had been planning for this for the past month, and it still did not seem enough time. Fortune favors the prepared, he mused as he rose and started walking towards the conference room... this battle would determine the course of events to come.

Alex sighed to himself, as he stood on the polished black deck of the Postatem's Hangar Bay. It was twenty minutes before the Admiral was due for his inspection of the troops. Alex had plenty of time, but he wanted this right. He felt he had already made a bad impression with the man, and he didn't want to screw up any further.

The last of his men were just entering the hangar now. The man, a sergeant, by his insignia fell into formation at his assigned place, and Alex looked over the mass of men, and women taking a quick mental count. Seven hundred men, and women, dressed in the black duty fatigues.

Even as he looked over them, he noted that they didn't look ready for an inspection. Nor did he, for that matter. They all looked out of place on the clean interior of a warship. They would all look more comfortable in the dirt, or mud. Stopping to think, he considered for a second that even with all of them in full dress, and fully cleaned, they would still look out of place. It was their eyes, that made them out to be what they were. Battle harened killers, unconcerned with tidyness.

Alex glanced at his crono again. Fifteen minutes... He sighed again, knowing they wouldn't pass inspection.

Cartos entered the hangar bay, accompanied by a staff of five admirals following in step. He lifted a hand, halting the company as he approached Torr, watching as the man saluted. He returned the salute in kind, before smiling and turning to the assembled troops.

His critical eye took in every excruciating detail: little scuff marks on the weapons, a tunic that wasn't tucked in just right, and the fact that the men looked ill at ease in front of a parade inspection. He straightened his back and furrowed his brow, slipping his sunglasses on before turning. "Commander Torr. Front and center."

Alex stepped out of the front of the formation, and stood in front of the Admiral, and saluted, saying, "Sir." He didn't fear the man, or what his evaluation of his men would be, but he still wanted to make a good impression. It was clear his men had seen combat, and were good at it, but he didn't know what the Admiral was looking for.
