Just to reiterate something that has been buzzing around for a while. This is my personal feelings on the matter. MSN convos are OOC unless both parties agree on it being IC. Simple policy here. So as to protect people against certain unscrupulous individuals that use MSN conversations that were intended to be OOC within IC means. Thus any MSN convos in which I am a participant are Out of Character unless otherwise agreed, any usage of said convos in the IC realm is godmodding.
Please, feel free to post comments or questions.

Well, whenever I have a conversation with Onasi on MSN, it always ends up on an IC debate, but I don't think either of us would ever use it in the RPG...

I agree that as a general rule they are OOC. However as with everything there are exceptions. Sometimes it is not stated but it is obvious to both sides that the convo is IC. That being said if there is any convusion as to the nature of the convo, OOC should be the overriding type.

But can a convo not be both IC, but irrelevant to the game?

Unless admins make explicit rules and then grounding them into the teeth of us all, then we make the policy in IC. I have stated mine, so has Skywalker and Han Solo.

With me, I have always used a very basic rule of thumb. If I open up a conversation with "hey" or "yo" or "'sup in da hizzy," I am OOC. However, if I ask to speak wth a specific character, or request a word with someone of a specfic rank, the conversaton is IC. Its the way I have always treated it.

Actually, I have kind of treated it off and on in the same way, being liberal as I am.

This is pretty simple. If you state at the beginning of a conversation that it's going to be IC, then fine. If not, then it's OOC. And a rule of thumb I always use even when it seems pretty clear that the convo is IC, is to always ask.

Also, IC must be mutually consented, in case one person is talking IC and the other OOC, the person speaking IC may not use OOC information. Mutual consent. And no, simply IMing the person doesn't qualify as unwritten consent. :p

Rule of thumb!? In the eighteen hundreds it was legal for men to beat their wives as long as they used a stick no wider than their thumb.

Well, uh...I guess that explains what happened to Leia.

Nice bit of trivia, though.

It might be Swali, but I'm sure its just a blue law, nobody has put in the effort to take it off the books. And I'm willing to bet you could still be punished for it :P.

I'm aware that this topic is a bit on the stale side, but I wanted to drop some input in on the subject. Perhaps what could be done to ensure people are aware what is IC and what is not would be to roleplay if you're IC and use parentheses or brackets for OOC information. For example:

<Nubis> [Hey, Ams.]
<Ams> [Hey, James.]
<Nubis> "Ams, we need to talk."
<Ams> "What's on your mind, Nubis?"
<Nubis> [So what did you do this weekend?]

You get the idea. It's a very great way to keep things fast and obvious. There's no chance of mistaking what's IC and what's not and it'll make it easier for you to reread logs in the future.

Just a few cents. Take it or leave it.

I'm more preferential to a system where you have a window with NO OOC text, talking to the other person OOC in another window. Makes it even easer to separate the two than brackets do.

That's a great way to go about it, and we do use that if we establish beforehand that the convo is gonna be IC, but to do that everytime you talk to someone on MSN is a bit of a pain. I sometimes forget about the parenthesis when using them during JPs or whatever, there's no way I'll remember them talking to people casually on MSN.

Meh. It becomes a habit after a while. I sometimes find myself doing it when talking with my non-roleplay friends. Whatever floats your boat. It was just an idea.
