Jax re-entered the training area dressed in the uniform he wore so long ago, when he was still learning his craft. He carried with him what appeared to ba a suitcase, setting it on a narrow table. Opening it with his back facing Seraph, he spoke softly. "From what I understand, Emperor Vader has taken a personal interest in you. Most intriguing... I wonder what it is you are, or what you are capable of..."

Keeping his back turned, he opened up the suitcase and reached within, the Sovereign Protector's body standing between its contents and Seraph's view. His feet were placed easily, shoulders squared, back hunched slightly as if searching for something within.

Seraph stood behind him, waiting patiently. His feet were shoulder width apart, knees slightly bent. He wasn't entirely curious to see what was in the container, he'd find out soon enough. It was all a matter of time.

The man spoke of the Emperor, as well. Seraph thought that this man had actually met the Emperor, as well. That black-clad man with the scarred face. The one who wielded the red blade. The red blade made of light. He believed that they were called "lightsabers," but that didn't change that the man was skilled. Very skilled. Seraph knew that he would have been more skilled if not for his suit. What had happened to cause that man to live his days inside of it?

Seraph would probably never know.

Jax smiled slightly beneath the visor as he pulled out two vibroblades modeled in the style of Terran wakizashi. He turned and flipped the knives into overhand grips, resting the deactivated blades against his forearms as he looked to Seraph.

"In order to best train you, Seraph, you must show me how much you know. You are not skilled enough to best Emperor Vader, but then again there are very few that are. Attack me, Seraph, hold nothing back... for restraint is death within these walls."

Jax bowed slightly, then flipped the daggers up into an easy guard stance, watching and waiting. It was not in the normal habits of Sovereign Protectors to make the first move.

The weapons he wielded were light and sharp. That he had two made the factor of speed greater for Seraph's opponent. The closest he came were the vibroblades, but those were far too large to have one in each hand against the smaller blades.

Seraph slowly drew one from the small of his back then lined himself up in an almost straight line. He arranged himself so that his muscles were barely involved in keeping him standing, relying almost entirely on his skeletal structure. He brought the sword up to eye level, with the blade vertical, the sharp side up.

In a flash moment, he sprang towards the Sovereign Protector, bringing the blade back slightly, as though he would go for a stabbing wound. Moments before he reached his opponent, he swiftly brought his sword around into a slash diagonally up at Jax, keeping a small bit of his distance. Getting close would be a large mistake, especially with the blades the other man wielded.

As Seraph charged forward, a minute change in the Sovereign Protector's stance was the only indication that he sensed the impending danger of the fighter's true lethality.

As time seemed to slow for Jax, he begna to scrutinize the weapons before him. First, the physical structure of Seraph was incredible - short of genetically engineered troopers, there was nothing like this being that he had ever seen. Next, the eyes. The windows to the soul... and these were empty. Not soul-less, far from it, but... a lack of passion for the battle that Jax found... unnerving.

Then to the blades. They were a thing of beauty. A katana design, light and sharp, used for flourishing slashes and precision thrusts, they were a difficult weapon to master, but once so learned were near impossible to defend against. The agility of the weilder, especially with his wings, would be a most impressive adversary in any fight.

Time, having finished its brief pause to the Sovereign Protector's eyes, suddenly crashed in on him in a near cacophony of sound, light, and sensation. He was suddenly very aware of the texture of the ground beneath his boots, the slight draft coming from the slit at the bottom of the door... the way one of the flourescent lights was angled 1.2 degress off axis - a natural by-product of replacement. The singing of the durasteel blade as it swept towards Jax's flank, the musical chime of the blade's voice, performing a song for an audience of two, an opera of death.

An opera suddenly cut short by two virtuoso tenors, sweeping from either side of the stage in conflicting paths to meet the soprano head-on. The twin long vibroblades held in Jax's hands swept to an X-shape at torso, his feet already moving to position his body in an intercept. The scissor-like motion of the vibroblades in the Sovereign Protector's hands stopped the attack in its tracks, the clang of steel on steel reverberating in the sterility of the training hall.

Jax's visorless eyes snapped up to Seraphs, and for a moment the world, the entire galaxy seemed to be held in suspense, Then, with a flick of his right wrist he pushed Seraph's blade to the outside and brought himself into close quarters. His left hand lifted, cleared of the vibrosword and swung in a precisely lethal arc aiming for the right side of the Thanagarian's head, His left leg was moving as well with his attempt to close the distance between the two, hooking against Seraph's right ankle.

The plan to keep a comfortable distance was immediately abandoned. Had Seraph not been acting while Jax was, his face would have met the precision stroke. While the left leg of the Sovereign Protector was moving to lock the right leg of the Thanagarian, Seraph’s left leg was moving as well. He brought it up to rest on the back of Carnor’s thigh.

It was apparent that speed was the essence of this battle. While each man was powerful physically, their weapons were not meant to overpower their enemy. Speed was the greatest factor, and the quickest would win. Seraph knew that this man was fast. He knew that he would match him there, as well.

Seraph knew he could only win through mismatch. He could not meet the other head on in the same fashion. Right now, they were matching speed, and Jax would eventually gain the upperhand.

He knew that his maneuver wouldn’t prevent the blade from making contact with his waist, so he brought his vibroblade up to guard his side. The two swords met for a brief moment, just a second. Then, that second ended, and Seraph forced the blade away as he turned his back to the floor. He opened his wings and pushed with his legs, thrusting away from the warrior. As a finishing touch, he attempted to land a kick on Jax’s back as he flew towards the opposite wall.

The clash of the blades was music to Jax's ears, the swish of the nanosilk with the ringing of steel forming a melody of conflict. Jax was already moving, the steps of the two combattants intertwined and flowing around one another with subtle precision and the deadly grace of a stalking krayt dragon. A contrasting yet cohesive vision of an almost lethargy for the fight against cold detatchment and clinical precision.

As Seraph leapt to take off, the placement of his body was clearly indicative of not only his attempted departure vector, but of the impending kick. The Sovereign Protector lifted a forearm and pivoted on his right foot, sweeping the Thanagarian's feet just enough aside to keep from impacting.

As the might beat of Seraph's wings caused a blast of air to impact Jax's form, his right arm was already coiling. With the quickness of a ghost viper, and just as deadly, the vibroblade in his hand suddenly whipped out, flying with unerring accuracy straight at the juncture of the Thanagarian's wings, directly between his shoulder blades. Even as the blade left Jax's hand, though, he backflipped towards the weapon cabinet, a surge of rht Force calling a slender vibrosword to his outstretched right hand.

Kir ducked and parried the slashing vibrosword with his lightsaber. The training droid, placed at Level 8, was nearly as fast as he was. He back-flipped over a balance beam and sprinted to the right as the droid’s cortosis-weave sword crashed down on the beam, rocking it back and causing it to stumble due to the vibrations from its weapon. Kir took the opportunity to lunge at the droid’s unguarded midsection, but it regained its balance and blocked. He slid his lightsaber up the length of the sword, hoping to get its fingers, but it adjusted the angle at which it was blocking and began pushing him back. Kit grunted and began pouring the Force into his effort, trying to get the droid to back off-

-And only succeeded in tripping over backwards.

Sighing in exasperation, he said, “End training regiment, Battlemaster.” The droid, halfway through bringing the sword down on him, froze, its photoreceptors darkening as the override placed it on standby.

Kir sat up and sheathed his lightsaber before hooking it to his belt. He held his head in his hands and said to himself, Why can’t I stop thinking about her? Tracyna Vennen was, of course, talented and beautiful, but no woman, human or otherwise, had ever had any appeal for him, much less affect him like she was. Krif, he had only spoken to her once, and now he couldn’t get her out of his mind.

You could have a normal life, you know, a voice in his mind said. It could all be yours, and all you’d have to do is-

What? Kir replied. Resign my commission? Abandon the Empire? Never.

Live to serve. That’s the only thing that you know how to do. Serve the Empire. You have been so caught up with bowing and carrying out orders that you don’t know how to be human. The Empire has robbed you of your due!

I can’t just leave, Kir shot back. They’d hunt me down and drag me back. Or worse.

Who said anything about leaving? And with that, the voice vanished.
