Hows this; you use super-fast starfighters in space, and reasonable atmospheric crafts in the atmosphere for dogfighting within the atmosphere?

Because the Rogue Squadron series of games exists? :p

Not necessarily. If you don't want people to one-up other designs, provide guidelines and acceptable limits and slap people with massive research costs if they don't pay attention to guidelines.

The idea has crossed my mind. Perhaps I'll go through with it... after all, this redesign window does allow people to tone down things for the new system. With such guides posted, it would allow for the insane designs to either be toned down or a more fitting price be paid rather than people just screaming that canon says the Empire has something of similar ability and therefore everyone should have them... *evil laughter*

In addition, maneuverability would be based on the shape of the craft. All you need to do is look at the description/picture provided and come up with a rating based on that.

If people want a ship that looks like a slug, then it will handle like a slug unless they spend some serious cash on vectored thrust upgrades.

Uh, any starfighter would have thrust vectoring. That's how SW fighters maneuver. They're not like BSG Vipers with RCS units at the extremities to allow for a 180-degree snap roll in 0.35 seconds. They handle more like aircraft than spacecraft for cinematic reasons, obviously.

And I have no problems keeping it that way.

You're building a straw man. Not the better writer, but the better planner, the better tactician, with roleplay affecting troop quality rather than the battle outcome.

The only reason the battles weren't like this in the past was because there were too many ships to manage effectively.

I know of several people that have wanted this style of play for a while now. Unfortunately, it's difficult to move a thousand ships in a perfectly described formation, requiring several inconveniently sized buildings for storing the calculations necessary for such a logistical feat. Forty ships as a heavy force, and suddenly it becomes a lot easier to plan and execute.

Roleplaying the fights becomes a wonderful way to excercise not only a different direction for writing talents, but interaction with cross-faction characters and perhaps unifying the player base while simultaneously strewing corpses all over the planetside.

Give it a try - after all, what have you got to lose by experimenting with it?

Indeed. It's a matter of scale. One CMAC admin simply cannot cope with a four-thousand ship fleet. Hell, even the old battles in VII were kinda tough, when the largest battle had twenty ships total... but these ridiculous blitzkriegs of an entire Navy slamming down on someone's head... :p

No, Alex... he means CMAC needs the buildings. :p And common sense dictates that it is progressively more difficult to engage in mass maneuvers the larger the fleet involved. Many chefs and that lousy soup, remember?:p

CMAC will probably keelhaul me for suggesting this, but...

Given that everything is getting wiped and whatnot, I would like to suggest we change the map to one that isn't a relic of a site that isn't hosted anymore.

The maps on Star Wars Atlas are based on the Nav-Computer.com maps made by Cartographer but are more up to date and the little inserts showing greater detail in the Greater Javin and Tapani sectors are included.

Sounds good to me, I hate the map we're using now. It's nicely designed but it's impossible to find somewhere unless you already know where it is (and sometimes that doesn't even help), or if you spend 10 minutes combing over it. I liked my map, but I was too lazy to maintain it.

Yes, Cray's map was quite pretty. But no one would maintain it. :p

Ooooooooooookay, apparently this needs to go up a lot sooner than I expected. I guess some are neither familiar with common design benchmarks nor where to find them... or they feel that the guidelines from canon are insufficient for their abilities. Well, that's okay. At the moment, these are not law, but they are what you will be priced by. Of course, if certain conditions persist... CMAC may have to become far more strict, as some have recommended.

We really don't want to need to be iron-fisted dictators, what with trying to revitalize the game and return it to a more Star Wars-like setting rather than a giant orgy of Warhammer, StarGate, StarCraft, Star Trek, Terminator, Babylon 5, and every single bloody other science fiction genre, game, franchise, or other medium with a remotely spacey setting... with a gentle sprinkling of Star Wars names in between.

(Sorry, a bit ranty... politics gone bad on another forum coupled with the impetus for this rushed chart :p)

ANYWAY... here's all you ever wanted to know, but were deathly afraid to ask lest you be eaten by our pet dragon.

CR90 Corvette
Length: 150 meters
Width: 48.6 meters
Height: 32.6 meters
Mass: 83,200 tonnes
Shields: 400 SBD capital scale
Hull: 188 RU capital scale
Weapons: 6 Taim & Bak H9 turbolaser mounts (2 dual, 4 single)

This craft is commonly seen in all hands, from the Empire to the Rebellion to civilians. Not explicitly designed for war, but capable in battle nonetheless.

Corellian Gunship (DP20 Series)
Length: 120 meters
Width: 51.1 meters
Height: 28.8 meters
Mass: 61,850 tonnes
Shields: 416 SBD capital scale
Hull: 176 RU capital scale
Weapons: 8 H9 Dual Medium Turbolasers, 4 Medium Concussion Missile tubes, 6 quad laser cannons

A CEC craft designed entirely for combat, this study combat craft has found its way into many arsenals in the Galaxy. The wealthy even have them for private defense forces.

Now, notice how the DP20, a dedicated combat ship, has more shields and armament... but less hull integrity? That's because it's smaller. Generally speaking, a small ship will have less hull integrity because there's less hull to blow away when struck.

Okay, next ship.

EF76 Nebulon-B Escort Frigate
Length: 300 meters
Beam: 72 meters
Mast: 166 meters
Mass: 540,000 tonnes
Shields: 960 SBD capital scale (altered from VII and Early VIII figure to more appropriate level)
Hull: 384 RU capital scale (see note at shields)
Weapons: 12 Taim & Bak XI 7 turbolasers, 12 Borstel RH8 Laser Cannons

Everyone knows this ship. Just about everyone uses it in canon, too. 'Nuf said.

Victory II-class Star Destroyer
Length: 900 meters
Beam: 564 meters
Height: 289 meters
Mass: 22,400,000 tonnes
Shields: 2880 SBD
Hull: 1360 RU
Weapons: 40 Double Turbolaser Batteries, 20 Medium Quad turbolasers, 20 ion cannons, 10 tractor beam projectors

A popular mid-sized ship in the Empire for ship-to-ship brawling. Its armament is well-suited to dueling with lesser capital ships, and letting it attack superior craft in groups.
