The currents of the Force warped around Jade, and for the briefest span Darth Olethros, Dark Apprentice, was left unknowing of her advance. The moment resolved quickly enough, however, snapping back to the crystal of the Now and showing him the path. Effortlessly, his single blade swept down in a mathematically precise downward slash that caught the tip of her saber and stopped the flourishing attack dead in its tracks.

A half-pivot and a flick of his wrist brought the blades around in a wide half-arc, the former Sovereign protector stepping forward to close the distance, momentarily bringing their faces an inch apart. His voice was calm, amused, without a trace of tension or fear. Indeed, it almost appeared as if... he was toying with her. "And I will not be the one to fail against a second-rate hand that seemed so eager for my training back on Korriban"

A mirthless chuckle passed his lips as he suddenly disengaged his saber, pivoting on the ball of his right foot. A split-second later, the speed and kinetic energy augmented by a burst of the Dark Side, his hand swung around and viciously backhanded the Emperor's Hand across the temple. The chuckle grew into an evil laugh as he spun away, her body landing heavily on the floor in a stunned heap.

The silver blade engaged again, and the former Sovereign Protector lifted it in a mock salute to the crumpled form on the floor. "Your claims of not disappointing your Master are falling well short of their words, Mara Jade. Perhaps you should quit while you're behind."

The world spun for a moment before Mara’s force honed abilities restored her from her momentary loss of balance and footing, she could taste a light coppery sensation in her mouth, Jax’s strike had come in hard and fast – and it had stung, with a growl Mara surprised the former-Protector by launching herself up into the air from her prone position using her hands and the force to propel her up, reigniting her lightsaber and swinging it at the back of Jax’s head in midair, a blow that was met by a reverse block from Jax as he spun on his heel to face his opponent.

Mara landed in a low crouch, left hand to the floor to provide ballance, saber-arm set back behind her with the blade hooked behind her in a reverse grip, she drove in low, seaking to take out his legs – Jax narrowly avoided the strike, skipping over it and swinging his blade in a heavy arc down towards her, she rolled parrying the blade on her back before rising to her feet with a skilful cartwheel, sliding her leg forwards and propelling her towards Jax – who, in a desperate moment managed another parry, locking their blades for a brief moment before he used his strength to throw her back, off of his blade.

She landed neatly on her feet and grinned at Jax, “You really think I’m so second-rate Darth Oltheros, when I can quite easily hold my own against you?” she laughed derisively, “Perhaps you should quit before I embarrass you.” She got a cold look in response and shrugged, “Don’t say I didn’t try to warn you.” she smilled and drove towards him launching herself into a twirling pattern again, her saber-trail streaming behind her as she drew the deception of the force around her – her saber went for an amateurs strike as if she was proving Jax’s insults correct, but he noticed her whirling legs far to late, causing a small gagging sound as they thudded in a scissor position around his neck.

Hah!” Mara let out an exclamation as she twisted in midair, using her momentum to carry Jax’s body into the air, tossing the Sith hard into the floor as she untied her legs from him, landing back in a crouched position some way away from him.

Impressive... most impressive. As soon as Jax landed on his back his hands reached behind him, and with a subtle twist that use no force potential he rocked up to his shoulders, then propelled himself into a double backflip with a half-twist. He landed surprisingly lightly on his feet, perfectly balanced, head tilting a little. The sound of vertebrae popping was drowned out by the hum of his lightsaber, the smirk tugging at the corner of his mouth once again.

"So the little Hand has a trick or two up her sleeve. Pretty, but it won't save you. I've toyed with you so far... let's dance." A sudden snap of the saber brought it into a Makashi-style salute, which quickly dissolved down with a Juyo flourish. The Dark Side coiled around the Sith Lord, and in a blur of motion he launched forward. For a moment he seemed to vanish, leaving only a blur in his wake, then reappeared with a cruel laugh behind her.

Lord Olethros' potential was far beyond what he could harness, yet the raw power behind the meanest of capabilities would still leave but a shadow even in the Force-Enhanced capabilities of the Hand. A strike suddenly lashed out, one that Mara Jade barely managed to intercept before it was withdrawn again. The darkness swelled, pulsed with the fury Jax let flow free from the bottleneck of his training, and a sudden warping of that aura gave Jade enough time to deflect before another strike came out.

Jax seemed to have gained his second wind, and was thoroughly enjoying this battle. That enjoyment pulsed through the Dark Side, bringing further command of the Force to the Sith Apprentice. A cackle echoed amongst the snarls and snaps of lightsabers clashing as Jax continued his assault. There was no breakaway, not this time, he simply poured more and more into the fight, increasing the speed and power of his assault.

The pressure Jax threw up within the force was impressive, but it felt restrained, not so much like the power she had felt from her Master in his moments of anger, but as though it was leashed by rigorous training, a method, perhaps, that Jax had managed to begin breaking through as he had risen to his new status, certainly the few other times she had been in the presence of him when he had been a Sovereign Protector he had nowhere near felt as strong as he did now. She kept from his blows as best she could, the sheer force behind them outweighed anything she could throw out – where they struck the ground the gouges shattered from outward pressure from the Sith.

She narrowed her eyes, as she skipped out of his reach, she didn’t like to release her potential before her master…it seemed almost…rude…but she couldn’t afford to restrain in the face of a foe such as Jax, unleashed she wouldn’t be able to match Jax’s sheer strength, but if she allowed her own skills to be flooded with her force potential she stood a better chance. There was a twinge in the force as she let herself become immersed in the force, Jax easily registered it, diving in with a blow bound to incapacitate her. She dodged it, scything out with her own blade in an attack that the Sith in return narrowly avoided jumping back from her blade tip – both duellist’s faces locked into expressions half-way between grins and glares, and dived for each other.

The two met mid-charge their blades locking, each seeking to hold the other to get a chance to strike at them before the mutual efforts caused their blades to slip unlocking them, causing a split moment as both Darksiders whirled around to strike at the other…two blades bound for mutual wounds…and there they both hesitated, both bound by their Masters orders not to harm each other. Two sabres, hovering just above the flesh of either duellist…their arms both outstretched mid-blow leaving them mutually trapped in a standoff, blades to each others throats – glaring at each other before the throne of their Master.

"Enough," the Emperor said softly, but with a firmness to it that ensured it reached the ears of his Hand and his Apprentice. "Very good, Lord Olethros. Quite impressive, Mara. You have both done very well."

He smiled at his most trusted agent and his burgeoning apprentice. His voice was of liquid silver. Granted, they both came within moments of killing each other, but showed just enough restraint to prove themselves worthy. "Mara, you may leave us. Your languishing is at an end; I think that I shall call upon you frequently in the future. It is good to see Vader's disuse of you has not dulled your abilities in the least."

Palpatine turned next to the apprentice. His eyes did not burn with golden heat, but nevertheless, he spoke as a Sith. It was good practice in maintaining his more... personable appearance. The Sith Lord knew he'd need quite soon. "An impressive display, Lord Olethros. Your skill and ferocity will serve you well against the Jedi. But above all is your control."

The old man shifted in his seat. "To control anything, you must first have control of yourself. Then, and only then, can you extend your influence on to others." He paused. "You have demonstrated that you are in control of yourself. And having passed the first step, you are ready to continue in your training.

"Now go," Palpatine commanded. "There is still much to be done."

Mara nodded to her Masters word, snapping off her lightsaber blade as Jax did so in return, clipping it to her belt and giving her opponent the slights inclination of her head as a sign of respect, turning and bowing fully to her Master and striding from the presence of the two Sith. It was only when she had cleared the antichamber of the throne room that she allowed a satisfied smile to grace her lips...she made her way back to the landing pad and to her waiting Airspeeder, nodding to the Royal Guard who had been escorting her there as she ducked into the sleek vehicle. Firing it up and heading to her residence within the grounds of the Imperial Palace to meditate and await further instructions from her Master.

In his private quarters, Palpatine finally relaxed. At least, he relaxed to the extent he ever allowed himself. The windowless room assured his security and privacy, although there were a few holographic windows for the extremely rare occasion he let his mind wander.

The room was dimly lit, but amply furnished. Let the Jedi have their austere tastes; Sith preferred a touch of elegance, especially this Sith. He padded across the thick, burgundy carpet to a high-backed chair. He settled into the oppressive-looking thing, and closed his eyes.

But he did not sleep. Instead, he reached out with the Force, sending little tendrils of himself spreading through the room, then the building, then across the planet. He reached out further with his perceptions, and smiled. He could feel the fear and tension in the Galaxy. He could pick up on the hints of dark machinations from this corner of the Universe, or a foolish beacon of light, trying to illuminate the dark. He felt sorrow, grief, rage, anguish, agony, hatred, and anger wash over him like a pleasant, refreshing breeze. He drew upon these dark forces, gaining strength from them. Oh, how little the Jedi truly knew about the true power of the Force.

But, he knew they would soon feel the wrath of the Sith once more. He had foreseen it. Soon, the Dark Side would rule. Soon, the cycle of vengeance would be complete.

Palpatine yearned for the day, but his years of politics and Sith teachings had taught him patience and control. The longing would only make final victory all the sweeter. He'd stand atop their broken bodies, and bring order to his Galaxy. Jedi anarchy would end, as would the pitiful rebellion against his reign. He would take personal delight in either dispatching or turning the spawn of his former apprentice. With them out of the way, or at his side, the Sith would be unstoppable and would rule unchallenged.

The thought made his cloned heart surge with desire, pumping cloned blood faster through his veins. So it was not his original body; he didn't care. Power transcended mere flesh. And power was the one true absolute in the Universe. And he alone would master it.

He rose from the chair, refreshed and invigorated. There was much work to be done to prepare for final elimination of the Jedi Order and the end of their pitiful Rebellion. The Galaxy was wayward and lost. And he alone could bring order to the chaos; he alone would be master of the stars.

The Sith Rule of Two was dead. He'd killed it when he confirmed Olethros and Avaritus as members of his new Order. Instead, only one ruled. And Palpatine would always and forever be the One.

A soft chuckle escaped his lips at the thought.
