ATTACK ON HOTH

The Imperial player sends the following to CMAC:

Fleets from Ison and Anoth will jump to Bespin, where they will join the fleet currently stationed there. After hierarchy is organized, three groups will form, as listed below. They will each jump in on a different vector to the planet, attacking at three separate points. They will scramble fighters on arrival, and jam transmissions. A request for an unconditional surrender will then be broadcast.

The fighters are to be launched first, followed by Bombers and Defenders. They will fly towards the planet in a screen formation, engaging enemy ships should the request for surrender not be accepted. Fighters will attack bombers, and bombers will attack the smaller Rebel capital ships. The larger capital ships will stay back further, engaging the fleets at long range. Should the capital ships have a clear path to the planet, they will launch transports to land on the planet, and their fighters will be assigned to escort those transports. Bombers will then be sent down to the planet as well to support the infantry in removing fixed emplacements.

Group 1:

-Super Star Destroyer
- Complement of TIE/In
- Complement of TIE Bombers
- Complement of TIE Defenders

-4 ISD IIís
-Complement of TIE Fighters
-Complement of TIE Bombers

Group 2:

-2 ISD IIís
-Complement of TIE Interceptors
-Complement of TIE Bombers

6 ISD Iís
-Complement of TIE Fighters
-Complement of TIE Bombers

Group 3:

-2 ISD IIís
-Complement of TIE Interceptors
-Complement of TIE Bombers

6 ISD Iís
-Complement of TIE fighters
-Complement of TIE Bombers

This battle is entirely non-canon, and assumes that Hoth is a fairly well-populated planet (military wise). The Rebels will be told this:

An Imperial Fleet arrives from hyperspace. Immediately after this, two more jump in, 60 degrees to either side, forming a circle. The following message comes in: ďRebel Forces, you are hereby ordered to stand down. Allow our forces to land without challenge and surrender your weapons to them and you will be allowed to survive.Ē

They may also be told the amount of forces attacking them. They are then expected to respond, like this:

The Rebel Fleet engages the groups one at a time. It stays within range of the Planetary Ion Cannon at all times, using it as support. The planetary shield is raised as soon as possible, and all forces on land are to assume defensive positions in trenches and bunkers.

The Fleet scrambles fighters in waves, starting with A-wings, then progressing on through X-Wings to B-Wings and Y-Wings. A- and X-Wings are to protect the fleet and bombers from enemy fighters. B-Wings are to give priority to attacking enemy transports with their ion cannons and torpedoes, while Y-Wings are to attack the smaller capital ships of the attacking forces. Larger Rebel capital ships are to engage the larger Imperial Capital Ships.

As the fleet already is on the planet, it does not need to be split into separate groups like the Imperial ones.

CMAC (or just Ams, the Battlemaster) would then look at the two stratagies, and compare them. Background information (whether or not the Rebel forces were expecting an attack, or the morale of the commander of the forces (should he be an NPC) on Hoth, would decide on the execution of the plans: do they manage to call for reinforcements? Do they assemble their forces in time, or do the Imperials catch them napping? Or, if the situation is suitably grim, does the planet surrender? All these things can be taken into account. In the end, after comparing numbers and stratagies, CMAC will post how the battle starts. This can either then be followed by more orders, or if a decision has been made, a consolidation by the victorious parties. In this situation, imagine that one of the flight groups manages to land itís transports on the planet, while the fighting continues in space.

As the Rebel player has had time to prepare his land forces, he will be able to post a detailed account of where they are:

Infantry are to take up positions inside the umbrella of the shield. They are to take up positions in bunkers and positions, keeping an even distance apart. Every fourth person in a trench should be armed with a heavy E-Web blaster. Every twelfth person is to be armed with a rocket launcher for anti-vehicle duty. Soldiers in bunkers should be armed with long-range weaponry such as sniper rifles, and should be picking off Snowtroopers before they can make it to the trenches. Turbolaser emplacements should also be manned.

On confirmation of the absence of anti-air weaponry (or on confirmation of destruction or said weaponry), snowspeeders will be launched to aid in dispatching the walkers. Minimal fighter support will be allowed on the planet to defend against bombing runs.

Ground Forces primary objective will be protecting the power generator which supports the shield generator. Their next priority will be the shield generator itself, as long as the power supply remains. Next is the Planetary Ion Cannon Emplacement, should that be destroyed, their last objective is Echo Base.

If the planetary shield is lowered, then non-combat personnel are to leave the planet by transport. These transports will need fighter support and will rely on the planetary ion cannon to provide a corridor for escape. Should the battle look lost, the very first line of defense is to retreat back to the last one. The second line, then, will hold as long as possible before they need to retreat again. This organized retreat will happen using the extensive tunnel system that is dug from trench to trench. Rebel soldiers are ordered to use explosives to seal the tunnels so as to prevent the Imperials from using them.

The Imperial Player will be told where his forces are allowed to land, and what he can see. Hidden forces may not be revealed, depending on their training , environment, etc., The Imperial player will five his tactics:

Forces will unload from their transports outside of the shieldís umbrella, using it as their own protection from weaponry fired from inside of it. AT-ATís will be flanked by two AT-STís. Snow Troopers will be deployed behind them, as well as inside the AT-ATís. Should the AT-ATís be evacuated, the Snowtroopers inside will join their comrades on foot. Walkers orders are to attack fixed emplacements with their heavy weaponry, while Snowtroopers are ordered to attack other infantry, especially those posessing anti-armor weaponry.

AT-ATís are to be grouped in threeís, with each wave heading towards the following targets (listed in priority):

The first trench line of defense
The power generator
The second trench line of defense
The Planetary Ion Cannon
Echo Base

The walkers are to remove fixed emplacements from the trench lines, concentrating on allowing Snowtroopers to gain access to the tunnel system. Once this happens, they will be able to get into bunkers and trenches and Echo Base itself, and the walkers will go back to attacking fixed emplacements. If the Snowtroopers cannot gain access to the tunnels through the trenches, they will attempt to cut through the blast doors that cut-off access from the bunkers.

Bombers will make be used to take out heavy weaponry, and may be used to forcefully evacuate trenches, but this is only to be used in necessary situations so as not to cut off access from the tunnel systems. Bombers primary target will be landed transports and fighters.

These, like the space orders, will be compared, as well as the amount of forces that are on each side. Do the Rebels manage to shoot down Imperial forces before they make it to the lines? Do Snowtroopers get a lucky break and bust their way into the tunnel system from the front line? Do they use the tunnels to spread through the battlefield, wiping out the rebels? Or do the rebels manage to pick them off at the bottleneck? Do infantry get trapped in the tunnels? If theyíre the victorious sides, do they get dug out later? If theyíre the losing side, do they get taken out later, only to be interrogated and executed? These are the things that are up to CMAC. This still allows you to roll dice, but also places importance on RPíing. Maybe the Imp player doesnít mention using the tunnel systems, and troops are so afraid of execution they donít use them. If the battles are RPíd out, then maybe the Commanders of the forces only realize their mistakes after several posts on both sides (and CMACís reports).

The benefits this system has over the current one are for both CMAC and Players. CMAC will not have to roll dice for every single weapon firing, but will still get to roll for random encounters: friendly fire, accidents, miracles, etc., This also lets players roleplay: the orders given at the beginning are like roleplays, and using them, CMAC can set up the battle. For instance:

Orders are sent in. CMAC post a preliminary report telling what happens at the beginning of the battle.

After reading this post, both players send in a roleplay. This can be changing orders, or maintaining them. CMAC then post how the battle continues, making suitable changes to the forces involved. This can go on as long as CMAC deem it necessary.

When CMAC posts a victor, that player can roleplay at the end. They can interrogate prisoners, look for survivors, etc., While this is available now, this new system allows the entire battle to become more player and less number/dice orientated.

Don't complain about fleets sizes/numbers, I have no experience in that

Bad idea, plus this has already been tried and failed.

On VII, a similar system was tried where all the players met on MSN and explained their tactics to CMAC and it failed(dunno why mind you).

Also, what you are suggesting will result in extremely inflexible planning. Things never go perfectly according to plan in a battle, and a commander has to be there to adapt to the situation as it develops. There is no way around that fact, even if you wrote a student thesis on the subject of how to win the battle.

So unless you want to be like the WW1 era officers where you stick to your plan to the bitter end even if it means wasting all your reserves on repeated frontal attacks under impossible cricumstances, then id advise not adopting this system.

You obviously didn't read the whole plan.

Opponents send in their preliminary orders to CMAC: formations, target prioritys, etc., CMAC then take the two and compare them.

They then decide what happens in the opening moments of the battle, post that in the battle. They then get more orders from the two sides.

Having never been in an actual VIII-moderated battle, I have no way of comparing the current Battle System to this one.
