So, it's my crazy idea to start a meeting at the end of every year to go over some things we accomplished here, both as a website and as a community. I'm going to start with the technical end of things (like usual :p), then I'll go to a summary of forum and site design features, and things that we plan for the future.

After that, I'll open up the "floor" for suggestions for next year - whether they be technical feature suggestions, game suggestions, or anything else you want to bring up.

Site Statistics

I've taken the values from this year and last year's VII on My-Pages.net. Since VIII didn't really start until May, the statistics in comparison from VII's are deceiving. In addition, bandwidth usage can also be affected by size and amount of images stored on the server. Regardless, it's safe to say SWVIII is more active than even SWVII was. I've also included a few things that aren't really site usage statistics, but are cool anyway.

Cycle: Mar 20-Dec 17 2006

Average Bandwidth* Per Month: 2.51 gigabytes
Total Bandwidth in the Period: 20.05 gigabytes
Busiest Month: October (3.68 gigabytes)
# of [successful] Hits (Page Loads): 3,297,135
Most Visited Page (for December): posting.php?mode=topicreview&t=1372
Most Popular Browser: Firefox

Last Cycle: Jan 1-Dec 31 2005

Average Bandwidth per month: 3.2 gigabytes
Total Bandwidth in the Period: 38.48 gigabytes
Busiest Month: December (7.29 gigabytes)
# of Hits (page loads): 2,641,520
Most Popular Browser: Internet Explorer

*Bandwidth is the amount of data transferred between the server and you.

Technical/Managerial Summary for 2006

During the end of December 2005, the decision was made to move to a new host for the then-upcoming Episode VIII by the SWVII CMAC.

Nevin “Cray” Antilles, Rae “Mace” Radjadoren and another friend by the name of Ryan divided the cost of a server and purchased a one-year plan from a new hosting company. The decision was made by CMAC to register a domain name for a new network of sites to host SWVIII and any other RPGs it chose.

On March 28th, the domain name for SWRPGS, swrpgs.net, became active.

On March 30th, the sub-domain name for SWVIII, swviii.swrpgs.net, became active. CMAC was retained through to SWVIII, with Ams as Battlemaster and Head Councilor, Han as Artist Councilr, and Cray as Webmaster Councilor.

Having elected to use PHP and MySQL for development, CMAC installed a copy of phpBB on the new domain name and began the design of something SWVII didn't have – a formal website. Tensig “Zara” Fey'kel graciously designed the template while Cray programmed the site and assembled the template.

Work commenced on SWVIII in early April. The news ticker was installed, and the site was launched with the modifications built by Cray for SWVII, along with an enhanced random banner system and customizable rank colors for moderators.

Han “Han” Solo modified the Solaris template to as it appears currently (minus the Christmas decorations :p) and did several other changes, including the navigational buttons, posting buttons, private messaging buttons and much more.

Ams “Moff” Jendob commenced work on an improved battlesystem and comprehensive listing of ship specifications, as well as directing and managing the entire process.

Luke “Gavin” Skywalker, Darth “Swali” Vader and Petyr “Ozzy” Baelish were brought over as admins and aedile, respectively, from VII. They have since contributed to the day-to-day operation of the forums, serving as both in-game players and out-of-character moderators.

A new tier system for admins was introduced, later, with Kalydon “Delta” Skirata to be the first Galactic Moderator to enter the system.

Since then, the forums and site have received immense technical upgrades. The website's login system was changed in Q3 this year to allow for more flexibility, and the forums have undergone many changes, including a carbon-copy system for Private Messaging and an improved "Board is Closed" system.

The forums were opened to the public on May 28th, 2006 for applications. On June 20th, the RPG was officially opened.

The forums and website, at first, were at a low performance level. After the host was able to sort out some networking problems, the site went back to full capacity.

During the latter half of Q4, the administration of SWRPGS.net has been working to expand its network of RPG sites, and improve its “holdings.” For a brief time, we hosted two new role-playing games: Vong Invasion and Star Wars: Clone Wars. We also uploaded an archived version of the classic SWVII at http://swvii.swrpgs.net. Another site redesign was begun in November, once again due to the help of Zara, and has recently become unveiled at http://www.swrpgs.net

So, what do we plan for the future? It's certainly been a fun year, but there is a whole lot more to come.

  • An improved system for SWVIII's forum. It will be unveiled at either the end of this month, or sometime in January. It will attempt to close the gap between forum and RPG, and to make menial tasks easier for players
  • SWRPGS.net will be hosting a new RPG.
  • SWRPGS.net will continue to be upgraded and developed as we solidify the basic site template that is now opened.

So, that, essentially, is what happened in SWVIII's technical and administrative development, and also what we have planned for the future. We're hoping for VIII to be more fun and free than VII was before it, and we're hoping that everyone will be able to drive their plots to whatever they wish. (as long as it isn't a godmod. ;) :D)

I'm now going to open up the thread to any questions, whether they be technical, RPG-centric, or anything else you'd like to state or ask.

Before I do that, I think I can speak on behalf of the entire administration that it's you who've made SWVIII successful, When you put any petty squabbles anyone has had with anyone else since the beginning of the game, it truly has been fun, and I hope it always will be, for as long as you're willing to devote your time to making this story something to be reckoned with. Thanks!

*applause* Well done Cray! I was amazed at how many hits we've had so far.

So what's this other RPG going to be?

Woohoo! Nicely done.

And now...the inevitable (*Bah, bah baaaaaaaahhhh!*) - Make some suggestions!

:P

1) It said that currently, this 'trilogy' has no name. While trivial at this point, I'm going to make a suggestion for a name for it (because naming things is one of those things that I'm oh so good at). I suggest "The Alternative Trilogy".
2) I'd like to suggest that in 2007, we finally get a mafia game going.
3) Finally (for now, at least), it's been discussed numerous times, and it's really something we sould look into - the battle system. I'm not saying that we need to change it (well, I guess I kind of am), just that we need to take a serious look at ways we can improve it for time and effectiveness and if we do find any ways where we can improve it for time and effectivness, look into implementing those changes.

I can't reveal the new RPG at the moment, I just wanted to tantalize you. :p

@Jawa:
1) I agree 100%.
2) YES! I will TRY. :p
3) Definitely. We're already looking into ways on how to do this, but does anyone else have suggestions?

And thanks to everyone. :)

Great State of the Un- I mean recap of the year, Cray! Very informative and really makes you appreciate all that it takes to keep a community like this alive. Good for you for taking the time.

I've already spoken with you and CMAC about my suggestions and ideas. So there's no need for me to recap here. And a new RPG? Who's doing that one? Timeline? Is it even SW?

I like how a battle system calculator/some sort of program to help with the battle system was completely forgotten by everyone else.
