James reviewed the datapad that was just handed to him by Admiral Krain. Indeed, the reports were disturbing, and he would have to act immediately, before the situation got out of hand. Handing the datapad back to Admiral Krain, he walked over to the communications station, and said, "Open a channel with Admirals Daala, and Cartos."

James waited until the connection was established, and said, "Admirals, I don't have much time, so I will be brief. I'm forwarding the data I have just received to your personal terminals via tight-beam transmission. Due to this new development, I must withdraw from this battle. Admiral Daala, I leave the battle in your hands. Taggart, out."

James gave the command to cut the channel, and said, "Transmit the data to both the Postatem, and the Vituperative via an encrypted tightbeam channel."

"Aye sir," said the man, as he set to work. After twenty seconds, he looked up, and said, "Done, sir."

"Good."

Moving over to the helm, James leaned down, and relayed his orders to the warrant officer at the station. After he received acknowledgment for his orders, he made his way over to the viewport. Taking one last look upon the battlefield, he turned to his helmsman, and said, "Helm, take us into hyperspace."

"Aye sir," responded the man, as the massive command ship turn from the battle, and accelerated towards a seemingly empty region of space. Once the ship reached the required point, the stars elongated into lines, and the black, and blue tunnel of hyperspace enveloped the Dark Confidant.

The ESD Dark Confidant is now enroute to an unknown location.

The reports were grim. They had lost nearly 45,000 men, and women in the engagement at Thyferra. The Imperial Star Destroyer Terminator had been lost, owing for almost all of the casualties. For a few moments, his hatred outweighed his guilt, and sadness. He had sent those men, and women to battle, had asked them to give their all for the Empire. They followed his orders to the letter. They gave their lives for the protection of the Empire.

No... That's not right. It wasn't protection. It was an attack, and I ordered the first shots to be fired. I ordered the deaths of the men and women manning those stations. Was it really my only option?

Pressing the palms of his hands to his eyes, he sighed, and reclined in his chair, letting his hands fall to his sides. No matter how he dissected the situation, the conclusion was always the same. He had opened fire, and indirectly caused the deaths of his subordinates. James closed his eyes again, but the harsh glow from his command room lights filtered into his vision anyway. Swallowing hard, he went through the scenario in his head, yet again.

In the end, James re-opened his eyes, and stood up, straightening his uniform. People die in combat, and that's unavoidable. If I continue to second guess my decisions I won't be fit for command. I did what I had to, thought James, as he exited onto the bridge.

Allowing himself a few seconds to compose himself, he pictured Faith in his mind, smileing as though everything was right with the galaxy. If only you could see how far I've fallen... he thought to himself as he looked towards Krain.

Pushing the thoughts of Faith, and the disaster at Thyferra to the back of his mind, James cleared his throat, and said, "Status Report."

The man replied as he usually did, that everything was in order. Although they were still waiting for a message from High Command. He hoped that they would send orders soon. He needed to keep himself busy.

Over a month. He had been stationed in this desolate system for nearly a month, and the toll it took on him was a visible one. He had nothing to do besides put his signature on requisitions, orders, and duty rosters.

He needed to be busy, as most of the day he was left alone to his thoughts.

Just as he was about to head to the hangar to survey the operations there, out of sheer boredom, his communications officer walked up besides his chair, and handed him a datapad with an encrypted message. Eyebrow raised, James opened the message after entering his various security codes, and read the new orders.

Smiling, he stood up, and said, "Helmsman. Set a course for Kuat."

The acknowledgment came after a few seconds. Another minute, and the ship was prepped to enter hyperspace. Sitting back in his chair, James ordered the ship into hyperspace.

The ESD Dark Confidant is now enroute to Kuat.

As the Dark Confidant exited the system, James looked over to his communications officer after re-checking his datapad. Clearing his throat, he said, "Communications, establish a link with the Cyric."

"Aye sir," came the reply as the man set to work.

Waiting for the link to be established, James ran over his notes from the Admiral's profile. Even though the man's psych profile indicated the bare basics of what he needed to know, he would have to judge the man's character based on his own observations.

After a few seconds the communications officer signaled that the link was established, and the image of the Captain of the frigate came into view. Wasting now time, James said, "Captain, inform Admiral Caedres that I request his presence aboard the Dark Confidant."

Before the Captain could reply, James closed the channel, and went to talk with the garrison commander on the ship to prepare a proper welcome.

The docking procedures went smoothly with the well-trained comms crew of the Dark Confidant. Caedres was already eager to work with such people.

'Shuttle 1E-C, landing approved in Shuttle Bay 6.'

The Shuttle veered slightly as it turned towards the correct alignment. The doors to the bay were slowly opening as the shuttle's distance closed. Caedres pulled his gloves back on as he waited near the ramp of the shuttle for the landing.

'Docking complete, you may now disembark.'

The ramp slowly opened to the bay, letting the harsh, beautiful artificial light in. Admiral Caedres walked down the ramp in perfect step with his guard, to be greeted by four officers of lower rank. Each saluted Caedres smartly in sync with the others, and he saluted back. The highest ranking officer, the Rear-Admiral, spoke.

"Admiral Caedres. Welcome aboard. We have been instructed to take you to the bridge."

Blaine nodded and said, 'Lead the way.'

He smiled a real smile. He was happy to be in a place not full of idiots.

-----------------------------------------------------------

After reaching the bridge, Admiral Caedres was still in a great mood. The officers had told him about the ship, random things not found in dingy reports. He was looking forward to meeting the Fleet Admiral. He stepped out of the corridor and into the bridge, his Storm Troopers staying in the corridor like properly trained men. A Staff Admiral turned around upon his entrance and Blaine saluted perfectly.

'Admiral Blaine Caedres, reporting.'

The Staff Admiral saluted back.

"Ah, yes. I am Staff Admiral Krain. I shall take you to the Fleet Admiral."

He motioned Caedres to follow and led him to the Command Room of the Fleet Admiral. Krain showed him to a door off to the side of the bridge and indicated he should enter. Caedres nodded and stepped inside after pressing the open button. He saluted upon entry.

'Admiral Blaine Caedres, reporting, sir.'

Standing, back faced away from the door, looking out the wall sized viewport the made up the back of his command room, James heard the door open, and the Admiral introduce himself. Hand's clasped behind his back, James waited just half a second, and turned around to face the man, returning his salute.

As he did, James said, "At ease, Admiral."

Walking over towards the edge of the large table, James motioned for the Admiral to take a seat. As he did so, James followed suit, situating himself just across from the man at a slight angle. Not quite squinting in the bright light coming from the glow panels, James looked the man over. He had the appearance of a man in thorough compliance with military dress code. His nearly white blond hair reflected the light of the command room, making it somewhat of a task to look him in the eye. From this angle, James couldn't tell, but the man looked to be shorter than him.

In his reports, James saw that his crew described his as a perpetually bored, or cold man, but he was smiling now. For all appearances, he looked to be a very capable Admiral of the Imperial Navy, but James would base his opinions on his own findings.

Leaning slightly back in his chair, James said, "Welcome aboard the Executor-class Star Destroyer Dark Confidant, Admiral Cadres. You're sitting aboard the Flagship of the Fifth Fleet, one of the only true attack fleets in the Empire at current." From what James understood, that would be changing soon. He only hoped that he would still be allowed to work with some of the individuals from his previous command. He liked working with familiar people. "I am Fleet Admiral James Taggart, but I'm sure you already knew that. Until Grand Admiral Zend arrives, I will be your commanding officer."

James kept the disdain for Zend out of his voice. Even though he didn't like the woman, he would still maintain the chain of command, and the appearance that the higher ranks of the Empire were in perfect harmony, although any cadet could tell that there were rifts between many of the personnel. Looking Caedres in the eye, he said, "Do you have any questions?"

'Just one, Fleet Admiral.'

He thought his question out thoroughly before asking.

'What would you like me to do aboard your vessel? You seem to have a competent crew. Much better than what I am used to. I would be glad to work with them. Just tell me what to do, sir.'

His eyes stayed on the Fleet Admiral's. He was impressed with the ship and with the Fleet Admiral Taggart himself. While he was listening to the briefing, he had simulated over 400 different defense strategies of a ship such as this. But something worried him. Large ships such as an Executor-Class Star Destroyer usually had a screen of smaller, more agile ships. He did not remember seeing this screen.

James smiled as he remembered reading about the man's strengths in his dossier. He had the perfect position, that would keep the man busy, and happy.

"It's fortunate that you showed up when you did, Admiral. My previous tactical advisor was General-Admiral Ferdinand Cartos. A brilliant man. After the Battle of Thyferra, he left the Fifth Fleet to serve with Grand Admiral Thrawn. In his absence, I have not been able to find someone to head up his position. I think you would be well suited to the position."

Thinking back on Cartos, James wondered how long it would be before the individual made Grand Admiral. He was undoubtedly more intelligent than James, and he wasn't afraid of proving his superiority over a superior officer in order to get a point across. While his methods lacked a certain level of tact that most people were used to, they were efficient. While James didn't believe that Admiral Caedres would deliver the effectiveness of Cartos, he knew the man was his best option out of anyone else in the fleet.

"What do you think, Admiral?"

'I think that... would be most pleasant. May we have our first tactical discussion now? I have already simulated every defensive strategy for your ship possible with everything I have seen. There are a total of seven-hundred and eighty-four strategies. Three hundred and fourteen of these strategies have an eighty or higher percentage chance of victory. Nineteen of them have higher than ninety-five percent chance of victory. If you wish to include a low casualty rate as part of the chance of victory, then that number drops to eight strategies. All of these strategies would be greatly enhanced with a screen of smaller ships. Normally, larger ships such as the Dark Confidant have a screen of smaller, more agile ships. I did not see one while on my approach in the shuttle. Also, depending on the abilities of your crew, the percentages that I have come up with could deviate anywhere between point six-seven to three point three-eight. I will need every dossier of every crew member on this ship to get the exact percentage. Now, the eight strategies I mentioned. May I borrow a holo-projector?'

He smiled and waited. He really enjoyed this type of discussion, even though it tended to bore anyone else who was listening.

"The Dark Confidant is without escorts at this time because the High Command wanted to restructure the Fifth Fleet, and they haven't gotten around to deciding which ships to assign to us," said James.

He then indicated the control panel inset into the command table that was positioned in front of Caedres, and said, "Go ahead, and I'll work on getting you the dossiers."

'Why do the paper-pushers always make the decisions that decide the fates of men and battles? Its... disgusting.'

He grimaced and turned to the control panel offered by Fleet Admiral Taggart. His fingers flew over the panel's controls and in a dozen seconds a holo of the Dark Confidant was floating in the air above them both. After a few more seconds of work, a screening fleet surrounded it.

'Now this is standard Imperial screen formation. A loose reverse-delta position with the heaviest flag ship at the rear point. Sometimes-' a few more strokes and new ships appeared '- with enough ships, a battlegroup with use two deltas, one normal, and one reverse to maximize efficiency. This, in my opinion is a waste of ships. It increases the casualty rate heavily, almost exponentially compared to the victory percentage increase. I would suggest a spheric formation-' more strokes and the screen repositioned itself in a sphere of cover around the Dark Confidant at its center '- minimizes the casualties while increasing the victory percentage sharply. This way, each ship is close enough to give cover to all the other ships around it. Compared to the double-delta, which gives no support to its point ship, when the point-ship is attacked, it only has two others to help in its defense, and when they move to cover, they leave the ships behind them unprotected. Also, delta formations have difficulties defending against attacks from above and below, while the spheric formation is just as efficient from any angle. The problem is... I don't think we can get the necessary amount of ships. Is there anyway you can... pull some strings, I believe the saying is, to get us this amount of escorts? If you can... I will guarantee victory for you in almost any conflict. Ninety-six point three-six percent of conflicts, actually.'

James listened intently to the Admiral, and then activated his own control panel, and said, "It sounds like a sound defense configuration. We could utilize it when moving from system to system. I want to get your opinion on one our current attack formations. Although at the Battle of Thyferra, I succeeded in minimizing allied losses, and maximized enemy losses far beyond tactical estimates with this configuration, it never hurts to improve upon something."

Punching in the parameters of his configuration, he looked as over 700 ships appeared in the holo field. Leaving the configuration there for a few seconds, he overlayed the holo-recreation of the Battle of Thyferra, displaying it for Caedres to watch.

"This is the battle. It was over before it really started. The enemy took far more losses than we did in terms of platforms, and ships. But we took the greater loss of men, with the destruction of the Terminator, and the three ships belonging to Strike Force Omega. In the end, we had to retreat. We had accomplished our goal for the most part, but the enemy had a fleet enroute. If they had arrived while we we engaging the planetary defenses, we would've won the battle, but the casualties would've been astronomical."

Caedres stood and looked closer at the hologram. The formation was of a reverse pyramid... almost flawless. The tactical work on this strategy was brilliant. After about thirty seconds of debilitations, Admiral Caedres could only find one thing to improve this strategy.

His fingers manipulated the image as he tweaked the formation. He then let Fleet Admiral Taggart note the adjust before running a simulation of the battle with this adjustment.

'Your strategy went from a ninety-six point eight-five percent chance of victory to a ninety-eight point six-four percent.'

James leaned forward, and studied the adjustment, intent on analyzing every ship position. With the Admirals' change, nearly every single ship had a broader firing line, and was able to cover just a bit more of the flanks.

Smiling, James looked back to Caedres, and said, "Excellent." It was then a thought occurred to him. "But I doubt that we will be utilizing this strategy again, due to lack of ships. From what I understand the Fifth Fleet is being downsized, and if I'm hearing things correctly, Grand Admiral Zend will be taking over the fleet. No doubt she will have her own strategies that she will be eager to employ."

'So what shall I do in the mean time?'

He didn't like the sound of the Grand Admiral Zend. It also sounded as if he was useless until she got here.

'How long will we be waiting for the Grand Admiral, sir?'

He couldn't ask more than that about a superior officer of such high rank. It rankled him though. Thoroughly.

James sighed. Caedres was in the same position as he was, stuck waiting for someone who never bothered to inform others when they would arrive. Resisting the urge to roll his eyes, and respond sarcastically, he said, "You'd be asking the wrong person, Admiral. I'm not privy to Grand Admiral Zend's schedule. For the mean time, if you could go over current orthodox tactical strategies, and suggest changes in their log files, it would be appreciated. Once you're finished with them, I'll look them over, and incorporate the changes if I feel they're beneficial."

'Yes, sir. It will be done immediately. Will I be working on the bridge, or do you have somewhere else in mind for me?'

The work for this would be very, very short as he had already written a document on all standard navy formations and ways to improve them. He had been planning to publish it soon, and now the time seemed right. It only would take a couple of minutes to update it with this new strategy and send it directly to the Fleet Admiral.

"You can take one of the workstations in the rooms off the bridge," he said, knowing that at least one of the rooms would have a station or two open when the ship was just coming off of a hyperspace jump.

"For now, I need to make a few inspections around the ship. Once you're finished, send the files to my datapad. If you need anything else, don't hesitate to either contact me by comlink, or Staff Admiral Krain, who will be on the bridge," he said, standing up, and gathering his datapad.

Blaine saluted as the Fleet Admiral said "Dismissed". The Fleet Admiral saluted back and turned back to his work as Caedres headed out. Looking around the bridge, he quickly memorized the large lay out and headed towards one of the side doors that standardly led to extra workstations.

When he walked into the room, he pulled out his own data pad and connected it to the first open station. He updated the file with the new strategy and sent it directly to Fleet Admiral Taggart. He leaned back in the chair.

Now what am I going to do...?

He ran through his logical conclusions of the question and sighed. He leaned forward and started scanning the Dark Confidant's computer systems for flaws in data routines and logistics programs. Each he would find he would fix quickly and attach a fail safe program. He had nothing else to do at the moment... might as well make the thing keeping him alive more efficient.

Caedres had not gotten very much work done when the officer beside him started to stutter uncontrollably. The Admiral stood quickly and looked at the man's viewscreen...

It can't be... the chances of this happening are... point six four percent...

His eyes narrowed as he stood back straight from leaning over the officer.

And its him.....

'Control yourself.'

He looked down at the paling man, before walking out of the side room. His vision fell upon the other massive ship that just entered the system. He could hear the excited voices of the other people on the bridge. Caedres hurried across to the Fleet Admiral's command room. He hoped he wasn't being to forward.

The door slid open and he stepped inside, saluting again.

'Sir, Grand Admiral Thrawn and his fleet have just exited hyperspace. In system.'

Just about to leave the command room on his inspection, James was two feet from the door when it opened, and Admiral Caedres appeared in the opening.

"I'm aware that the Grand Admiral is in system, Admiral," said Taggart smiling at the man's apparent excitement. "He, and General-Admiral Cartos, the tactical adviser I mentioned earlier are most likely here to conduct inspections. It's likely that they have no business with us, so we'll just go about our own schedule, which coincidentally, has me doing inspections now. Do you wish to accompany me, and see the inner workings of an Executor-class Star Destroyer?"

'That would be... interesting.'

He nodded his head slightly and fell in step with the Fleet Admiral. His eyes roamed the bridge once more, noting the control and efficiency of the crew. He knew the inner workings of almost any vessel in the Empire's fleet, having memorized all their schematics. But... he had yet been into an Executor class Star Destroyer, and would greatly enjoy this experiance.

As the two walked out of the command room, James turned, and headed for one of the main crew pits. Noting the quizzical expression from the Admiral, he said, "I start every inspection on the bridge, noting the performance of each officer, and offering suggestions when they're needed."

Starting with the engineering stations, he went down the line of the crew pit, making sure to note the readings on the displays. So far, everything was going well, and they were operating above spec.

Turning around, he made his way out of the first crew pit, and into the second. Nothing would go un-noticed today, especially with Grand Admiral Thrawn in system.

"Dark Confidant, this is shuttle Starhawk requesting secure docking in bay 003, code clearance Alpha-042 Crimson."

"Shuttle Starhawk, this is Dark Confidant hangar control. Your override code has been confirmed, manual overrides to hangar bays commencing. Confirmation codes have been routed through subspace tranceivers, the bay crew are the only ones aware of your presence. Please follow your present course and land in bay 003."

Ferdinand Cartos piloted the shp through the hangar bay doors, which still appeared closed to the Bridge Crew command consoles. It was a high-priority signal used only by Grand Admirals, the Imperiel Executor, or the Emperor himself to conduct surprise inspections on the Executor and its crew. One that Thrawn had not used often, but the times he had, had caused near pandemonium over the rest of the fleet.

Setting the ship down on the floor as the bay closed and atmosphere was restored, Cartos set the loading ramp down before turning to the Grand Admiral. A smile touched his lips as he nodded once to Thrawn, then turned and exited the ship first. Taking one of the deckmen by the arm, the General-Admiral spun the man to him. "Deploy stormtrooper patrols in a different variant than usual, I want one of the back halways completely cleared. the Fleet Admiral does not know we are here, and I intend to keep it that way before we make our presence known."

The deckman saluted before scampering off to the control booth, and Cartos turned tot he ship and saluted once, then about-faced and waited for the telltale bootsteps to come up behind him. Cartos leading the way, they made their way through the empty back halls of the Dark Confidant, taking them up a narrow set of barely-used stairs towards the bridge. Originally designed as a way to get Stormtroopers back to the bridge if the ship was taken over, it now served an excelent purpose to keep their presence a secret until the very end.

Finally, the three stopped before the bridge door, looking to one another. Thrawn nodded to Cartos, and the General-Admiral keyed in the over-ride code, opening the doors and stepping inside. Fleet Admiral Taggart's back was turned, so the three waited patiently until someone noticed, Thrawn to the fore with Cartos at his right shoulder and Rukh at his left.

Supreme Moff Ams Jendob says:
"How many shots does it take to get to the mantle underlayer of a planet, Admiral Cartos?"
"Well, Billy, let's see..."
