I am getting really fed up. The java issue I mentioned before seems to stem from compatability issues with Vista. I realized I should care less. Java doesn't even make real programs.

I was trying to get MinGW when I finally decided to deal with a MAJOR problem with my computer. For some reason the internet only half-works.
The following programs connect to the net on my computer:
Firefox
Explorer
Lobo (java-based browser)
Win 95/98 egames browser (no longer used)
X-Fire
Spore Creature Creator Free Trial
WildGames orb
Zoo Tycoon
LEGO Digital Designer (latest version)

And these ones can't:
NetZero (oh the irony)
Cabal
LastChaos
McAfee
Norton
SWEaW (even with X-Fire)
Driver Detective
Open Office
Media Player
Google Desktop
Windows Mail

Does any body know what is going on and what I can do about it?

Check your Windows Defender firewall exceptions. If the nonfunctional programs aren't on the list, add them.

Remove McAfee and Norton ... probably won't help your internet problem but your computer will run about a thousand times faster...

No, because any Terminator with Norton software would massively slow down periodically to scan itself. :p

Anyway, dudop... did the previous suggestions help?

I've never had any problems with Norton...

Running a Vista-x64 with a dual core CPU and 4GB of RAM.

Aren't all antivirus programs evil? I mean, to scan they have to slow you down.

I actually have removed McAfee, because it is a virus. I tried to install Cabal, an hours-long process, and right smack dab at the end, McAfee deleted a chunk of it. Twice. I nearly threw my laptop at the wall.

I only have Norton because it somehow sneaked a peice of itself on my computer, I don't mind because it at least desn't delete my files without asking permission. And in order to scan it needs to download the rest of itself, so I'm getting no trouble from it whatsoever.

Strange, I thought I turned the firewall off completely but I guess not. I'll get back to you on that...

EDIT: nope.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't turning the firewall off a bad idea...like the crossing the streams kind of bad?

Instead, add the program as an exception so the firewall doesn't auto block said program.

Well it definitely won't do that  but I'm pretty sure the firewall won't matter if I stay on reptuable sites and don't download anything *sideways glance at heaps of freeware C++ compilers*.

Could it relate to my wireless LAN internet? Perhaps they expect me to be hooked up directly to the wall...

I just got desperate and downloaded a LOLCode compiler. I seem to be cursed, it doesn't work. I'm reading code snippets anyway.

OMG, I triple posted, I'll get it for this.

But you know how you said Norton was evil? Well it turns out you can not "get pwned by your antivirus" http://shop.symantecstore.com/store/symnahho/en_US/DisplayProductDetailsPage/ThemeID.106300/pgm.25684400/productID.121351600?resid=v5cwXQoBAkYAAGW5-0QAAAAk&rests=1242408403900 I thought that was funny.

Anyway, it turns out that a small number of programs (at least NetZero and Safari, which I just got) were blocked from the internet by a program I installed, and while I don't know how to uninstall/savage it, I can interrupt its startup process.

Some programs are still refusing to work though, namely Explorer. I turned too lazy to check the rest.
