The Grand Admiral's fleet dropped from hyperspace almost on top of Marisel's, precisely as scheduled. A throwback to the days of chivalry on the battlefield, the two had agreed on a set date and time to execute their gristly work. This location had been chosen precisely for its total neutrality. No civilians to aid, no chance of a rogue fleet dropping in to lend a hand, and easy escape should the going get tough.

Not that Thrawn had any intention of retreating at the moment.

The fleet had been arranged and set before they had jumped from hyperspace, after the Grand Admiral had time to reflect on the history and the chosen works of art that resided within the Fleet Admiral's dossier. As such, he had arranged his fleet accordingly to present a surgical edge, a facade that could rapidly shift at any moment.

His command ship, the Starhawk II, was nestled as the reinforcement of the blade edge. his five Imperator-II-class Cruisers deployed in an arrowhead formation on a unified plane with the beam of the Dominator. His Venators were deployed behind the massive ship, their forward hangar bays already opening to begin the process of disgorging their multiple squadrons of starfighters. The four Acclamator-II assault frigates were deployed with two dorsal and two ventral to the Dominator, each of them set in a tripoint flat-plane arrowhead with their Carracks... except two. The two squadrons on the dorsal plane only had two Carracks flanking the Acclamators port and starboard, with the Lancer frigates heading the formations... most interesting.

The Interdictor cruiser sat between the Venators, priming the gravity wells for use should the need arise. Thrawn's voice cut clearly over the communications channels, the smooth and melodic baritone resonating over the frequency. "Surrender is perfectly reasonable in the face of overwhelming odds, Admiral. This is your one opportunity."

Fleet Admiral Nosh Ker Marisel standing on the bridge of his command ship listens as Thrawn’s voice flows over the frequency demanding the surrender of the Admiral. Marisel opens the frequency with Thrawn and gives his reply in a soft sinister voice, “As tempting of an offer as that sounds, I’m afraid that I’m going to have to resign myself to just destroying you instead.” The Admiral then closes the frequency without waiting for a reply and prepares his fleet for the battle soon to come.

Marisel looks out into space and sees Thrawn’s fleet approaching in a arrow head formation. He than takes a moment to think upon how best to counter this assault and within a few moments has come to a decision. He ordered the fleet into three sections, two of the sections were ordered into the same composition, and created for the task of flanking the enemy fleet, while the last would head straight at the enemy. The two flanking sections were comprised into five Carrack-class light cruisers, two Acclamator-II-class Assault Frigates, two Imperator-II-class Medium Cruiser’s, one Lancer-class Frigate and one Venator-class-Carrier. These were arranged with the Carracks forming a ring around the Acclamators and the Imperators with the Lancer on the forward end of the ring closest to the enemy and the Venator in the rear, furthest away from the enemy. The last group would remain in the center and back of the other formations. This formation would be comprised of the Admirals Dominator-class command ship, a Imperator-II-class Medium Cruiser, two Carrack-class Light Cruisers and the Immobilizer-418-class Interdictor Cruiser. The command ship was positioned in the front with the Carracks positioned just above and to the flanks, while the Imperator-II was positioned on the Dominators upper right flank, and the Immobilizer at the rear left flank of the Dominator.

With the fleet in position and ready to complete their task of destroying Thrawn’s fleet, the fleet started to head for their target. The two flanking sections started their flanking maneuver while the central section started a slow steady forward advance. The fleet also started to launch their complements of starfighters whose main goal was to protect the fleet’s ships from Thrawn’s starfighters and attacking any targets of open opportunity. The Immbolizer warmed its gravity wells in case Thrawn tried to escape after his inevitable defeat. Fleet Admiral Nosh Ker Marisel let a little smile slip as he watched his ships start to head for Thrawn’s fleet; this would be a great victory indeed.

Thrawn smiled and took a moment to leave the bridge, to move to his secondary command station in the converted officer's lounge located mere meters from the primary bridge. Holoscan projectors hummed a moment, and then sprang to life with detailed overviews of the formations and visual schematics. He opened his primary frequencies, modulated to a non-Imperial standard communications channel to keep the fleet move from prying ears with an encryption based on his native language of Cheunh.

"Our adversary is fond of balance, it seems... too bad it has no purpose in this engagement. Starfighters, assume zonal attack pattern, backfire speed, and join the Carracks in formation. Carracks, assume flank speed and prepare to engage the enemy. Target the leeward squadron (That's the one closest to Coruscant for those keeping score, off the Grand Admiral's port side). Acclamators, launch your fighters and have them engage the forward Imperator, join their attack at two kilometers back. Link fire systems to target the forward deflector array, blind their sensors. Starhawk, take evasive action pattern Pardus-04, signal our escorts to follow suit."

The ships began moving, the starfighters moving into eight separate swarms as the Carrack leads moved towards their confirmed targets, the Acclamators beginning their move. The Starhawk II suddenly pitched, the Imperator-II's remaining in perfect formation. but it wasn't to escape. The ships, moving in the the namesake of the formation, suddenly pitched upward as it descended beneath the command ship. The broadside turbolasers opened fire as the ships passed within 50 meters of one another, the greater maneuverability of the cruisers moving out of the Dominator's line of fire, emerald bolts of energy suddenly bombarding the ventral shields of the command ships.

The Carracks focused their fire on the enemy Lancer heading the formation... a foolish move to put such a ship in a position to bear the brunt of attack. The heavy guns of the Carracks, as well as the rapid firepower of the formations of starfighters would tear through the shields of the Lancer as they moved on strafing runs towards other ships.

The small smile that had slipped onto Nosh Ker Marisels face was now gone and replaced with a look of sheer determination and anger. He watched as his Lancer is getting pelted with a constant flow of fire from the enemy Carracks and fighters. Hummm, this could be a small window of opportunity. They were all concentrating most, if not all of their firepower on the fleet admirals forward Lancer that was part of his right hand section. This would be but a momentary advantage as the Lancer would not last much longer under the constant beating. Marisel must act quickly before this happened. He ordered his Venator that was part of that section, to move into the middle of his Carrack formation and in order to fire on Thrawns fighters, while the Carracks fired on the assaulting Carracks. He ordered the fighters that were recently deployed from his Venator to move in and engage the attacking fighters and Carracks, while the Acclamators and the Imperator-IIs broke formation and headed towards Thrawns main battle group with their perspective fighters as cover.

The left hand section continued on its flanking of Thrawns main battle group with their perspective starfighter escorts. They would continue on this course, making minor adjustments as needed, while destroying anything they encounter until they reached Thrawns main group. When they reach that main group, they will do whatever they can to ruin Thrawns day, and ultimately his life.

Nosh Ker Marisels command ship continued to trade shots with Thrawns command ship as it passed by a mere fifty meters of each other. He ordered the lasers to fire a continuous spread throughout Thrawns ship while the Concussion missiles he instructed to target as much of Thrawns main bridge as possible. If the missiles can penetrate the ships shields at the bridge and cause a hull breach, than Thrawns ship would be a free falling pile of junk (that is until the auxiliary bridge could be brought online). Once Thrawns ship passes, Marisels command ship will shift its aim to the smaller cruisers that are following it and if at all possible knock Thrawns Immobilizer’s gravity wells out of commission before they are even activated. Marisels nearby Imperator would do the same while offering protection to the command ship along with the starfighters until otherwise ordered. The TIE Interdictor’s launch from the command ship would also fire on Thrawns command ship to help aid the shield penetration of the missiles against the bridge.

Marisels own Immobilizer was given a fighter escort made up of a TIE Defender squadron and two regular TIE squadrons from the command ship and ordered to the edge of the battlefield with the gravity wells at the ready. The Immobilizer would remain close enough however that if it ran into trouble, assistance could be rendered before losses were taken. Its importance would come into play at the conclusion of the battle, no matter who the victor.

After Marisel had given all of these orders, and they began to be implemented he returned to watching the battle from the view screens. He did just as the right hand section’s Lancer frigate exploded into a brilliant plume if light blue flame from the constant fire it was receiving. The first major loss of the battle for Admiral Nosh Ker Marisel. However, soon Thrawn would be experiencing many major losses from the battle as Marisels plans came to action.

The fire coming under his command ship would come too little, too late as the ships passed each other at more than 20 MGLT, the huge vessel unloading its port broadside batteries against a point less than fifteen square meters in size within the span of two seconds. As soon as they were clear the agility of the catlike namesake of the move would come into play. Dorsal bow thrusters and ventral stern thrusters both kicked into overdrive, coupled with the explosive release of air pressure from the ventral hangar bay would twist the massive ship in maneuvers it was never intended to make. Scraps of metal, junk and refuse developed over the command ship's recent tour, jettisoned in a cloud of metallic shrapnel directly towards the squadron that was formerly left alone from his initial assault.

Thrawn's voice came cooly over the intercom as the enemy Lancer flickered and left his display screen, prismatic bursts of energy from his starfighter's cannons hammering against the shields of the leeward squadron while the wayward was still reacting to the lopsided assault. "First blood goes to me, Admiral. I assume you'll continue fighting." The comm switched off again as the command squadron, the five Imperator cruisers and the massive Dominator already coming back for a second pass. However, their focus was not on the command squadron.

Thrawn's voice clicked to his own bridge, calm and collected as if he were ordering dinner. "Starhawk, signal the Carrack assault. Perform a rutilus mere in five seconds, turn and regroup around the Venators and Interdictor. Prepare for second assault. Engineering, accelerate to flank speed and prepare to overtake the squadron." The ship shuddered the slightest bit, repair crews scrambling to keep up with the Grand Admiral's tactics of putting the ship through paces more suited for the smaller cruisers. Inertial dampers were overloading, and structural integrity fields were showing in the upper yellow. Fortunately, they wouldn't be required again for a short while.

The maneuver, named for the mythological sea that an oppressed people crossed to escape their oppressors, soon came into play. The starfighters remaining, all but five squadrons of Line fighters, two of Interceptors, and seven Defenders suddenly split in wonderful harmony, the wayward squadron streaking towards the Interdictor cruiser in a vicious assault as even the starfighters went to flank speed, moving in erratic patterns of the Marg Sabl closure he had ordered earlier that the tracking computers of the ships in that squadron would have extreme difficulty predicting. They started to unload their firepower against the shielding of the bridge as, behind them, the command squadron primed its guns.

Moving at the Dominator's flank speed of 45 MGLT, the squadron overtook the assaulted leeward formation, unleashing a hellstorm of forward firepower against the rearward shields of the Acclamators and Imperators. his own Dominator, itself, focused its batters equally among the enemy Carracks. The squadron would peel through the unexpecting squadron like a knife through butter. As they moved through the formation, the forward batteries began to silence as the broadside guns took over, continuing the assault against the shields of the Imperators and Acclamators.

His own Acclamators joined the squadrons of starfighters coming from the Carracks in their assault on the Imperator of the command squadron, while the Acclamator-IIs began their own fusillade of firepower against the medium cruiser. forward shields intensifying against the returning fire. The battle was going splendidly - his foe was showing improvisational tactics and an ability to adapt, but his reaction times needed improvement and he needed to learn more how to pre-act.

Admiral Nosh Ker Marisel watched in awe as his left hand flanking group of ships was hammered by Thrawns fleet. Instead of anger or worry rushing across the Admiral, a strong feeling of pride appeared within the Admirals innards. He was proud to be a part of the Empire which housed such men of talent and skill such as Thrawn. Thrawn took even odds and turned them into an overwhelming advantage that Marisel could not contend with but hoped to learn from. Marisel continued to watch his left section get torn apart by Thrawn and knew that the battle was lost; it was lost from the beginning. Marisel realized that his critical error was to split the fleet up into the three sections, just as Thrawn most likely had hoped to do with the arrow formation. However, that was something to think about during the debriefing. The battle was not done yet. Thrawn was still blood thirstily and it was Marisels time to regretfully prepare a means of egress. One must know when it was time to fight, or to give flight, and it was time to fly. However, this would not be an easy task to accomplish for Thrawn still had his operational Immobilizer which Marisel knew would be activated at the first sign of retreat.

Marisels initial plan was to disable Thrawns Immobilizer during the course of the battle and then if necessary retreat and activate his own Immobilizer once clear in order to prevent Thrawn from following (well, at least buy some time until his Immobilizer was destroyed). However Thrawns Immobilizer was still operational, and his own was under heavy fire and would not last long. It was time for protocol Marisel 47. This action was very risky and could result in many casualties, but it was either that or total destruction of his fleet, for surrender was not a viable option.

Marisel opened a channel to all the remaining available ships that are under his command. The Admiral addressed his men in a calm reassuring voice which sounded of a man who was in total control “Men, you’ve all fought bravely today. I could not have asked for a better group to serve under me. It is my dishonor to report to you all that we have been bested by a superior mind of a superior man. I hereby order protocol Marisel 47 to be initialized immediately.” His ships replied immediately to the order and Marisels ships started to regroup with his command ship, the ones on the left flank staying where they were to keep Thrawn from moving in to counter and also because they really could not move very far before being destroyed. Marisels fleet rotated to face directly into Thrawns, but not at the command ship, but the Immobilizer. Protocol Marisel 47 was a risky direct charge at the enemy gravity well containing ship, destruction of that ship, followed by a quick breakaway procedure and then a hyperspace jump to predetermined coordinates. The object was to destroy the Immobilizer before Thrawns fleet could destroy his own fleet.

Marisels fleet started the charge at the Immobilizer at maximum velocity with weapons firing upon its shields. Marisel despised the idea of retreating, but it was a necessary evil in this case. The Immobilizer was well protected, but it would not matter with the force of all of Marisels remaining ships firing directly on it with little bare on the other ships. For that reason along it was a risky maneuver. His ships must work quickly, otherwise Thrawns mite would crash down upon them and the casualties would become greater than they already were.

Marisel started to wonder if it was too soon for retreat. Could the battle be turned around and the edge in his favor? Could Thrawns assault be halted and countered? With one look out at his dying left hand section the though immediately left his mind. Without reinforcements to help combat Thrawn, victory would not be obtained, for this was just the hunter teasing at its prey. The full might of Thrawns power has yet to come out, and if it did… there would be no retreat, only the remains of Admiral Nosh Ker Marisels defeated fleet floating in deep space after Thrawn was done feasting upon it.

The Immobilizer, finding itself at the brunt of the attack, immediately went into evasive action. The command squadron pitched, executing a 10 kilometer-wide circle to find itself once again facing Marisel's oncoming fleet. The starfighters had returned once again, and with less than 50 kilometers remaining between the two sets of combatants there wasn't much time.

Thrawn's brows narrowed as he considered the implications of the formation, unique to his eyes but not to its intent. They were focusing on the one trap that kept them from retreating, one of the Grand Admiral's favorite ships... the Immobilizer-418 Interdictor Cruiser. If his overall battle strategy was to come to fruition, it would have to now. "Execute the Stingers." His fingers tented as he leaned back in the replica of the command chair on the bridge, watching as the shadow of the gravwell aimed its cone of influence not directly at his foe's command ship, but with the trailing edge just in front of the bridge.

But there was something strange about it. Just after Thrawn sent the message, a wide-spectrum ping would resound on all frequencies... the pitch of natural C. The key, the command code. "All batteries open fire, aim for the opposing command ships bridge." The batteries unleashed: all of his cruisers and frigates as well as the Dominator opened fire at the same instant, hundreds of emerald killing bolts splashing against the shields, ultimately overwhelming the craft and rendering it momentarily unprotected.

The Grand Admiral's voice came over the intercom, saying just one word. "Endgame." A twinkle of realspace reversion, and two Carrack-class light cruisers, having been left out of the battle for just this purpose, exited hyperspace at their maximum speed. The Interdictor cruiser had provided them with the gravwell necessary to revert from hyperspace at just the right location, and the ping had announced that the ships were to approach from directly behind the command ship. A tactic developed and nurtured over countless simulations, now being put to the test.

The cruisers moved with deathly silence, no transmissions emanating across and channel. They were also crewed with 'droids only. The craft, their sublight engines approaching critical mass and propelling them at speeds greater than 95 MGLT, streaked for the bridge of the command ship. They would only have seconds to react before the small ships plowed straight through the command structure, through the gap in the shields created by the brutal fusillade of fire.

With a thunderous impact that shook the massive command ship to its core the light cruisers' hulls buckled, then the hypermatter reactors exploded in a plume of crimson flame that made the entire forward superstructure split and fissure, pieces of the hull breaking off and flying in every direction. The engines, no longer with propulsion controls, sent the vessel spinning wildly off course, colliding with one of his remaining Imperator cruisers before leaving the scope of the battle.

The simulation pod screens flickered then went dark, leaving the Grand Admiral and Marisel alone, face-to-face. A slow, indrawn breath from Thrawn's lips broke the silence, before that modulated voice spoke. "Well done, Admiral Marisel. I presume this has been a learning experience for you?"

Admiral Nosh Ker Marisel have been defeated stood looking at Thrawn in pure amazement. He never in a million years would of thought of doing something like Thrawn did. He was truly standing before a pure genius, developed throughout a magnitude of situations and battles to make him the tactical genius that he is today. Marisel was in such a state of amazement that he almost did not hear the words coming out of Thrawns mouth. Marisel stared in to Thrawns eyes and let his voice come out in a smooth even tone, “Yes sir, thank you sir. It was an honor learning from a great man such as yourself. I only hope that next time my performance will be improved and fit to your liking.”
