Soft light trickled in from the blinds and awoke Mitth'uli'sabosen from his sleep. He gave the chronometer on the side table a quick glance. Six minutes early to rise. It sent a flash of annoyance through his body, clicking the dormant alarm off, he sat up and stretched.

Thulis' assistants would be meeting him for brunch at their usual cafe in the northern quadrant. Typically, that consisted of standard formalities and a brief rundown of the day's agenda - meetings, meetings, and meetings. Though the work was monotonous and sometimes irksome, Thulis welcomed his duties with open arms. Feeling useful and important was a commodity he wasn't prepared to waste.

The refresher was only a room away and quickly brought him back to full consciousness. For a few minutes he let the hot water run over him, tilting his head back to let the steaming flow rejuvenate his body. Life was much different in this part of the galaxy and still left him with a nauseating sense of home sickness - even years after leaving the Ascendency. The Imperium.

"Peh," he spat with disgust, pulling himself back from his deep thoughts.

Aldous folded his hands behind his back, taking long strides down the hallway of the upper-class apartment complex. At the end of the corridor, he could see across the city skyline, marveling at the bright sun cresting the horizon. In his mind, he quietly imagined all of the worlds that would see the sun rise under Sovereign rule, once his project was authorized. Refocusing his thoughts, he located the room number that he’d been searching for. The Department of Commerce was touchy when it came to the authorization of experimental projects with the prospect of failure, especially with a relatively unknown specialist like himself.

Adjusting his collar and tie, Kimball softly knocked on the door of the apartment, hoping that it’s occupant had woken.

If not for the soft rapping at his door, Thulis would have slipped back into deep thought, forgetting for a moment the hassles of his morning routine. Turning the water off, he stepped out and quickly dried himself. Whoever was at the door must have been a government official on business. Especially at that hour.

"Just a moment," he muttered into the wall comm, perhaps a bit of annoyance seeping into his voice. Thulis quickly donned his uniform and made his way to the door, keying it to unlock before giving his tunic a sharp tug and slight brush. The figure on the opposite side as the door parted, did not surprise him. "Greetings, Mr. Kimball. Please come in."

Giving a soft bow, Aldous entered the luxurious apartment of the blue-skinned individual. He slowly gazed around the residence, marveling at the expensive décor, though, he realized, his opinions mattered little, considering his nights were spent sleepless finalizing and finishing the prototypes for his dreamchild.

He turned about on his heel and gave a formal bow. “I apologize to disturb you at this hour, Tribune, but it’s urgent I speak with you concerning budgetary appropriations for my Exosuit Project. I do hope you will forgive me,” he said, circumspectly gazing into the man’s red eyes.

Thulis couldn't help but pass a careful, controlled smile. Though his timing left much to be desired, Thulis respected the man before him for his dedication and persistence. Anyone who cared as much for something as Kimball did for his project was to be admired.

"Not a problem," he gestured to an armchair which was one of several in a conversation corner. "Please make yourself comfortable."

Before doing so himself, Thulis punched another few keys on a nearby panel, turning the blinds to open, allowing more light to flood the room and offer a spectacular view of the capital city - the citadel clearly visible just beyond the skyline.

"Yes, I received a notice that you would be meeting with me soon to work out the last details. I must say you were cutting it close, Mr. Kimball," he started, crossing one leg over the other as he made himself more comfortable. "I'm supposed to be meeting with the Appropriations Committee this week to discuss your case. I take it then that you've brought the last details for me?"

Smiling, the Regimental Commander and Scientist sat down on a long, cream-colored sofa dominating the center of the Chiss’s apartment. Squinting as the blinds fluttered open, he gazed out upon the expansive metropolis of Lannisport. Kimball sat forward, his hands together, and regarded the Tribune, “Once again, I must express regret over having to interrupt you so early in the morning, but I am set to run the final series of tests on the x-3 armor on only a few hours, and I wished to speak with you beforehand.”

One hand came up, softly rubbing the amber hair on Aldous’ chin. “Though I may have a biased standpoint, I must say, the project has surpassed even my expectations for success. The droid brain and drug administration software on the x1 functioned almost perfectly, if not having an acute vulnerability to EMP and Ion-type weapons. Fortunately, that was corrected in the x3 model. The x2 had not a single error in the prototype test, and the hydraulics allowing for strength enhancement ran at 110% efficiency with the modifications I made personally on the microfusion reactor.” He shook his head slightly and laughed, “I’m sorry, I must be bogging you down in technojargon.”

"Not at all," Thulis replied. "I understand everything you say, Mr. Kimball, though I could personally care less for the technical details, they are important to the committee and your case. Your project isn't a cheap one, as you know, and I must admit that going into the meeting, the committee isn't likely to send any new funding your way."

With a soft sigh through his nose, Thulis stood and paced neatly before the floor-to-ceiling viewport. The sun had finally crept its way over the horizon and was now flooding the sky with a brilliant blue matched only by Thulis' skin. His shoulders relaxed, he turned to the man once more and broke the silence he had created. "Given the history of the project and your ... robust confidence in it however, I'm sure I will be able to present a good argument in your favor."

Aldous nodded slightly at his words, “A sad time it has come to when one must goad the Department of Commerce into supporting a project that could win militaristic dominance for the Sovereignty over its enemies. If only I could speak directly to Lord Baelish, as I did with the da-iPs armor, I could get funding immediately…” He sighed, like the Chiss.

He winced as the sun came over the crest of a far building, glaring at Kimball. He ran a hand through his thinning hair and continued, “I am absolutely determined to finish this project. Once complete, the Infantry Exosuits could revolutionize the armies of the Sovereignty. It truly is a pity nobody can see the importance of my work.”

"Indeed," he nodded. "Now if you'll excuse me, Mr. Kimball, I need to be heading off. If there's anything else you need, do not hesitate to contact my office. I'll make myself available to discuss anything you need before the meeting with the committee."

Thulis took another look at the shimmering skyline then ushered the man towards the door. There was a stillness in the air he didn't quite enjoy - like the calm before a storm which made the little hairs on the back of his neck stand on end. He shrugged the thought aside and led the man into the hallway outside the apartment.

"I'm certain things will play out as needed, Mr. Kimball," he added, making a polite attempt to calm the man's tension. "If there's nothing else, I'll speak with you soon."

Kimball regarded the man quickly, and then returned his gaze to the floor. His hands ran constantly over one another, a visible display of the internal strain Aldous was being put under. If the budgetary committee did not give him funding, six years of work would be irrelevant and void. Six years! His finger popped as he flexed it, and the man winced slightly.

Muttering quickly, he stood up with his briefcase. “Yes, of course, I’m sorry to intrude. Thank you for your time, mister Thulis,” he said, and quickly scuttled out of the door. In the hallway, he quickly extracted a pill from his pocket and swallowed it, allowing the calmness given to him by the medication wash over him before he returned to his laboratories.

Dissolved.

Thulis returned to his apartment quickly, heart pounding in his chest. Yet as he slumped into the chaise lounge, he showed no sign of the trouble and anguish burning inside of him. So soon after leaving the Ascendency, the Chiss Imperium, it was happening again. The dissolution of one happy life into another, uncertain existence. For a time he had thought that things were changing - that the days forward he could spend in relative peace.

But with headlines and special reports breaking across all of the major Devaron networks, peace appeared to be a fantastical dream. The Galactic Empire had absorbed the Devaron Sovereignty without so much as a fuss or murmur from the people. The whole situation seemed eerily reminiscent of what transpired on Csilla only a handful of years prior.

"Remain calm, Mitth'uli'sabosen," he chided himself, loosening the clasp on his collar. "Think clearly."

The idea of running away suddenly seemed appealing, but after running from one life to another that was now headed for the same fate, he cursed himself for thinking it would change anything. The Chiss Imperium would continue to exist no matter where he was in the galaxy. And now running from Devaron wouldn't change its deal with the Empire.

"Only those with the loudest voices can be heard."
