Wargames.

Used by the Stormtroopers as a combination of final test, playtime, and gauge of tactical mastery, it proved to be an excellent testing ground for potential commanders within the Stormtrooper Corps. And today, the primary subject to be tested was none other than the Corps’ newest Confederacy Xenos project, Zero.

Colonel-General Thanates Scyntor took a special interest in the man, the way he seemed to come alive with the donning of the armor, and the intelligence belied by the stuttered speech and the seeming obsession with finding his home planet. The classes the man had taken proved that Zero was completely able to process information, and the standard tests of reflexes proved that his armor was augmenting his abilities across all graphics. It would prove interesting to see what the single warrior would be able to do with another hundred and fifty thousand personnel under his command.

In the meantime, however, the present was what he was concerned about. And he needed to know that the man could handle any situation in front of him. The Colonel-General looked around a moment, smiling grimly… Carida City had willingly joined in this exercise and he would use its occupants to their fullest advantage. Already, a corps of elite troopers, the next for the Crimson Guard training academy on Yinchorr, had taken over the capitol building and turned it into a fortified bunker, and a contingent of Phase II Dark Troopers were providing automated sentry works behind the hillsides surrounding the city.

The sound of soft, metallic whirring filled Scyntor’s ears as he turned to face the down proper. His body was completely encased in a newly acquired suit: an exoskeleton of Phase III Dark Trooper armor. The powered armor augmented his already-prodigious strength to inhuman capabilities, as evidenced by the 3 inch-thick durasteel bar tied into a knot and cast aside. He knew Zero would be approaching soon, and he was prepared for it.

”Command Team Alpha, move into position three kliks southward, take one AT-AT and two scout mechs, patrol the perimeter and inform me of any anomalous readings. Strike Group Gamma, ready the ships guns, keep them concealed behind the mountains until summoned. Dark Troopers, move into loose cluster formation a half-klik from central command, keep guns trained in a ten degree arc, do not deviate unless the trooper beside you falls. Colonel Hayes, take your team and move to the north, protect our flanks. Take a Scout unit with you as well, set long-range sentries to the north and west.

With the mountains to the west, and sentries to the north, south, and east, Scyntor was confident that he would persevere. However, that was why he was Colonel-General… but the margin of victory he had in this situation would determine Zero’s final rank in the Corps.

" Sir!", a scout called out, running up to Zero. " We have our initial reports on the opposing force!" The scout handed a datapad to Zero, who accepted it and scanned the information. As he read it, the processors in his armor made immediate copies in his mind for instant reference. Scyntor was definitely playing rough. Using the city ruled out the massive firepower of the AT-ATs as an overwhelming factor. There was no need for heavy civilian casualties. Doing this would require diligent planning and a multi-pronged attack. His mind and the computer brain of his armor worked together, adding the human factor of improvisation and ingenuity to the cold calculation of a CPU.

" Alright," he said, motioning to his commanders. " Here's how we're going to do this. I want five AT-ATs, accompanied by one of the Acclamators with a full troop load and a ground escort of fifty-thousand Stormtroopers to approach from the south. Use the walkers for cover and march in single file ranks to hide your numbers and prevent grouping of casualties. You will try to look like a main assault force. In reality, you will be the first diversion."

" Merdeno!", Zero shouted, grabbing the attention of the Captain of his elite troopers. " I want half of your men to approach from the east! The other Acclamator, three AT-ATs and five of the AT-STs, along with a ground escort of twenty five-thousand Stormtroopers and four hundred Phase Two Dark Troopers. I don't know where exactly Scyntor is hiding his big guns, but I want you to find them and remove them from the equation." The captain nodded, rushing off to gather his forces.

Looking around at the remaining commanders, Zero smiled wickedly. " Now for us, we get the real fun. As the last two AT-ATs, three AT-STs and an escort of twenty thousand Stormtroopers and two hundred Dark Troopers assail them from the northern flank, we will make our move. The rest of the elite commandos and Stormtroopers will be led by myself, with the remaining AT-STs and Dark Troopers through the mountains in the west. We'll use the route and terrain to our advantage. Hopefully, we can make our vantage point into the city there."

" Remember! If any units engage Scyntor personally, I want immediate notification of position. He is my primary target! Chop off the head and the body dies. If anyone from any group runs into him, notify me immediately. I am the only one here qualified to take him one on one! Do not risk attacking him! Retreat from him and notify if met personally, that's an order. Let's move out!" With those words, which solemnly showed the men that their leader was willing to take te largest risk for them, the attack plan went underway. it was time for Zero to prove himself.

Scyntor canted his head slightly as the armor's acoustic transmission modules crackled to life in his ear. "Sir, Forces are beginning to mobilize. Geological resonance sensors place roughly half of his force approaching from the south. Atmospheric ion disturbance says they are also bringing one of their Acclamators that way as well. Recommend moving three hundred Phase IIs to intercept.

Scyntor thought a moment, then shook hsi head. To counterattack that quickly would overextend his forces and leave the flank wide-open to counterattack. pondering a moment, he used the suit's augmented leg servos to jump up to the top of a two-story building on the outskirts of town, noticing the subtle shifting morass of humanity being mobilized. "Deploy one hundred scout troopers on bikes, half to the southeast and half tot he southwest. Skirt their sensors and get a visual analysis of the true force. Use scramble code Cradis-842 to transmit findings."

Scyntor thought another moment, then switched to another command frequency. His voice was transformed into a morse code-like series of pulses, but the pulses themselves only transmitted half of the orders... the data packets that those pulses carried were the other half. "Phase 2 troopers, second batallion. Assume 100-meter perimeter around the city, arm cannons and missile launchers. As soon as you see his troopers, find cover and open fire. Report your position and logistical data to Commander Akashi and myself, scramble code Yinchorr-alpha. "

Scyntor turned to view the northern sky, and smiled grimly... he would have a surprise waiting for the incoming invaders. "Northern perimeter forces, set your therms for proximity detonation, time to arm ten standard minutes. Deploy five scout troopers to sink them 25 centimeters beneath the soil and get out before they arm... we'll blast their feet out from underneath them."

The Colonel-General was taking delight in the vast tactics he would introduce Zero to this day... some he would be familiar with, some he would not. But Scyntor would meet Zero face-to-face while the battles raged around them, and he knew to prepare once again for the fight of his life. He learned a lot about the man the day he was found on the Plains, and he would need every bit of that knowledge to best him in single combat.

Zero kept his eyes ahead of him as they marched. Encrypted transmissions were coming im from all fronts. Scouts had monitored Scyntor's response. The main diversion force from the south had encoutnered numbers of opposing scout activity. Zero sent out his orders over the encrypted channels. " Southern force, do not engage scouts. Maintain present course and attack plan. All troopers maintain use of AT-ATs for cover. As soon as you engage, I want you to use evasive tactics without retreat. Keep them busy as long as possible. If casualties maintained exceed thirty-five percent, retreat."

" Western forces, send half of DT-IIs ahead with fifty elite commandos on speeder bikes. Make use of hit and run tactics. Try to stir up their defenses and draw their fire from the main distraction force." Communications came in as units began to engage, northern forces were experiencing difficulty. " Sir," came the comm from the northern commander. " We've encountered an improvised minefield. Thermal detonators planted in the ground!" Simulated explosions came in across the information being sent to Zero's armor.

Zero frowned, quickly processing the information. " Have your DTs scan for detonator positions and sweep the field with arm cannons to clear the path. Maintain your attack pattern after that. We're showing multiple DT encounters along the perimeters of the city. Let your own DTs and walkers deal with them. Zero, out." As Zero's own force neared the perimeter, he halted the line. " Alright, I want half of AT-STs and Dark Troopers to enagage theri forces! Clear us a line in that perimeter!"

Scyntor's comm crackled to life. "Sir, we've been engaged at the north front! I'd say, a legion plus of Stormtroopers, and 200 Phase IIs, and walkers!" The Colonel-General smiled grimly... it was going as planned. His tactics were very straightforward, too by the book... he didn't anticipate that the fire from the minefield was in and of itself a ploy to know exactly how far the opposing forces were. Now it was time to bring his own forces to bear.

"Acclamator 1, take your troops and five mechs out from behind the mountains, assume position a half-klik from their rearward lines and rapid deploy. Trap them between your lines and the city. Take 300 Dark Troopers with you... Zero is with them. I can sense it..." Scyntor himself moved towards the eastern lines, where the bulk of his forces were said to be coming.

He summoned half of his elite forces to follow him and armed the suits onboard deflector shields, then twisted his wrist. A shoulder-mount rocket launcher and a portable rotary cannon with visual tracking sprang to life, and his heads-up display suddenly alighted with crosshairs. The elite forces immediately fell into a tridelt formation with Scyntor at the center, their weapons armed and ready.

"Southern forces, fall back and divide. Legion 1, move into the mountains. Legion 2, move to the southwest and prepare to flank their forces. Dark Troopers, close up formation and train guns forward only, half power and double rate of fire. I want them to fall rank by rank. Initiate." The mass of troopers suddenly moving again, the heads-up display showing small blips of transponder signatures as they moved to his orders."

Zero frowned grimly, scanning the information from the reports that were coming in as the information flashed across the back of his mind. The northern forces were being outflanked. Scouts were reporting full entrenchment around the city. Zero gritted his teeth and scowled. He was relying too much on the armor. It's computer was forcing him to make mechanical decisions. He need to pull his troops out of this mess, take back an advantage; or at least level the playing field. Feeding the input from the reports into the armor's CPU, he created a map of the battle in his mind. Scanning the map and placing forces as the latest information was added, he had an idea.

" Okay, listen up! The encrypted call went out to all of his commanders, all around the city. " I want the Acclamator that is supporting the eastern forces to load up an AT-AT! Head to the northern attack and wedge yourself between Scyntor's forces and our own. Unload the AT-AT to provide cover until the northern walkers can turn and return fire upon Scyntor's troops!" Focuisng on another section of the map, Zero sent out another transmission. " Southern forces! I want two AT-ATs broken off from the battle group! They will advance to provide fire on eastern and western entrenchments, respectively."

" Don't get too close to Sctntor's lines! Just get close enough to bombard the entrenchments, your mission is to provide cover. Especially here in the west! We need a hole in that line, make one!"

From the Imperial Command Centre Nebulax watched with vague interest at the proceedings. He had two things on his mind:
One, he needed to replace the chairs in his office with something more forboding, and two, Zero might well replace him.

Scyntor watched the proceedings from high atop the tallest building in Carida City, surrounded on the ground by a phalanx of elite warriors and supplimented by Phase II Dark Troopers. He watched as the battle lines shifted, watched the specks of AT-AT's shift their direction and head towards his eastern and western flanks. Zero was noncommital, diverting attention to where he thought it was necessary, probing for weaknesses from much too close.

His armor's optical sensors clicked, reacting to the slightest muscle twitch in his shoulders to zoom in on the western front. That was where Zero was coming in... the tight knifeblade of his formation versus the drawn-out lines of his other front indicated that was where he wanted to open the gap... so, of course, Scyntor would oblige him.

"Legion Epsilon, fall back. Make your way through the Carditria Pass and re-form to the north and south, reinforce the flanks. Walker Squad Beta, move to the west and augment the city entrenchment lines. Batallions Beta-Alpha and Beta-Beta, fall back and foxhole, let the enemy pass you. Execute tactic Patriatch, Rang`Shada augment. Execute.

Scyntor smiled cruelly beneath the smooth form of his Phase III armor. The point Zero's forces were hammering would soon seem to buckle and collapse, driving the defending Legion into a retreat. So, too, the forces to his left and right would fall back, opening that gap in the lines... until they got to the city. Then, the remainder of Legion Delta would close in from behind and isolate his force, where the entrenchment lines of Phase II Dark Troopers and walkers, combined with the city's natural fortifications would spell certtain doom. Of course, he was confident that Zero would be able to escape the slaughter, however how much of his force would be able to sneak through the gap he had intentionally placed there remained to be seen.

"Red Squad... prepare the yuletide reception for our impromptu General."

Lines of information raced acroos Zero's mind. The CPU in his armor processed incoming data, creating possible solutions and feeding them into his conscious mind, allowing him to make decisions. The day was growing late, losses had been taken to both sides. The northern forces had managed to stalemate Scyntor's defenses and reinforcements. The situation was the same on the eastern end. Zero frowned, Scyntor was hardly paying attention to the large distraction force at the southern edge of the city. It was time to make a move.

The entrenchments at the western edge seemed to break from the AT-AT bombardment he had ordered, that's what it seemed like. Zero patched in a video uplink to his CPU from his scouts. It looked like it could be a trap. Zero processed the information of the entire battlefield up until that very moment. His computer ran scenarios, tactics and countermeasures. Cross referencing them with recorded data of Scyntor's various campaigns for the Empire, which he had taken special care to download for lessons, he came to a realization.

He couldn't win...

He ran the equations again, he had to be sure of what the data was telling him. Yes, it was all the same. Every tactic he had used had been dealt with in the most efficient, counterproductive manner. He simply could not when. A thought crossed the back of his mind, a human thought, not enhanced by his armor. That was what Scyntor had planned. That's why they had been given equal number of forces and Scyntor had chosen the city. With his tactical knowledge, the best in the Empire, supossedly; he had simply wanted to truly test Zero.

There was to be no chance of victory. That was the only explanation. Scyntor had simply wanted to see how he would react and plan. That was the only explanation that made sense to Zero. It was like putting a pressure switch on an eighty ton block of duracrete. You couldn't budge it, but it would give an accurate measure of force exerted to push it. Zero sighed, realizing now that he had no choice but to take the bait and head into the city. He still owed Scyntor a personal match. There was no way his forces could win the battle, but he wouldn't let Scyntor have victory without feeling it.

Giving the order for the southern forces to make a push on the city, he looked around at the formations of his own battle group. As three AT-Ats and fifty thousand troopers stopped being a distraction and made a push on the southern edge of the city, Zero nodded. The battle group moved again, heading into the city as Zero gave the order for half of his own DT-IIs to watch their rear with arm cannons and missile launchers primed.
Zero looked towards the heart of the city, it was time to finish this. As battle erupted, Zero took down ten troopers with blaster fire and drove his saber into the neck join of a DT-II, effectively disabling it's systems.

" SCYNTOOOOOOR!!! Stand and face me!!!", he shouted furiously at the city as his forces continued to engage the trap that had been sprung.

thud

Scyntor landed on the ground behind Zero, a subtle smirk on his concealed lips. Around him, the battle was progressing well - troops were falling around them in nearly equal numbers, the Colonel-General's forces maintaining a slight numerical advantage thanks to the entrenchment... bt that was the purpose of the excercise.

Zero was good, he had seen through the ruse quickly and called the Colonel-General on it early on, rather than drawing out a protracted battle that he could not win. The prospect was gratifying, and he already knew where he was going to place the Xenos. Of course, he had inklings early on and the final choice would certainly be interesting for Zero's future commanding officer, but the knowledge that Zero displayed was enough to cement the findings.

A durasteel blade rasped out of a recessed sheath on the back of the Dark Trooper Phase III Armor, coming to the armored grasp of Thanates Scyntor easily. A second blade followed the first, and the bulky suit moved effortlessly to a low guard position. Around him, blasterfire rained all around the two warriors, one in white and the other in black, both of them escaping unscathed. Of course, Scyntor had issued orders early on that none of the troops fire at the man: the Colonel-General wanted him personally.

His voice came out through the suit's sound system, cold and calculating without a hint of electronic distortion. "Well done, Zero. You have proven yourself most capable indeed... now, about that rematch." The smile was evident in the voice, even though Zero had no way of knowing except for the vocal modulation that he was, in deed, facing the Colonel-General directly. The blades spun easily in the suit's grasp, the manual dexterity of the carpal and phalangal servomotors paralleling that of Scyntor's own ease of movement.

Without another warning the vibroblade lunged for Zero's elbow, the rinforced blade carrying with it an ionic charge capable of shorting out electrical conduit, effectively mimicking a limb lost. It was a feature built into the armor for the purposes of this test, to show Zero's dexterity and combat knowledge while in the supporting armor, and would be deleted with the refitting that would take place immediately following the battle.

Emergency Acceleration, Activated

That was the message that flashed across Zero's eyes as reflex, combat conditioning and the neural processors took over; causing him to leapbackward at full speed, digging his heels into a building ledge with enhanced strength. The armor Scyntor was using.... while it didn't enhance Scyntor as much as Zero's armor enhanced him, it was a deadly accessory for the already formidable Colonel-General. Green eyes focused on Scyntor, while neural uplinks scanned the armor. He had to find the fastest way to take out the enemy.

Scanning...

Dark Trooper Phase Three Armor Identified...

Threat Level: High...

Recommended Primary Offense: Successive Fire From Z-Buster MkXVII...

Searching For Z-Buster.....

Z-Buster Not Found...

Scanning Alternative Offensive Measures...

Alternative Options...

1: Disable Armor Plating With High Impact Strikes In Joints From Z-Saber

2: Extreme Blunt Force Damage To Primary Armor Systems

3: High Output Electric/ Electromagnetic Discharge To Short Out Enemy Systems

WARNING! WARNING! WARNING!

Option Three To Be Used As Last Resort!!!

Zero blinked away the scan results, he would need a few seconds to choose an option. Gripping his vibro-saber tightly, he lunged from the side of the building. The entire process had taken the short amount of time it took Zero to leap away from Scyntor's attack and kick off of the nearest building ledge for a counterstrike. In a red and white armored blur of speed, Zero met his opponent again. Locking his saber with the one in Scyntor's right hand, he gripped Scyntor's left wrist, holding back the other weapon.

" We have a problem, the armor is searching for a weapon and subrotuines that don't exist. By the way, was it necessary to engage me in a combat senario that my forces couldn't win?" With the last sentence, Zero dug his armored feet into the ground and kicked off with his enhanced strength; planting a leg into the Colonel-General's chest and kicking him away, relinquishing his hold on the larger man as he did.

Hand-To-Hand Systems Analysis Initiated. Heuristic subroutines online and operating within parameters.

Scyntor took two steps back with the impact: the Phrik construction and exoskeleton, combined with the armorplast-reinforced duranium sheathing around the Colonel-Generals limbs was a very heavy load to move, and the premuim-grade servomotors were designed to resist any undesired motion: as a result, the suit was virtually immoveable when its occupant decided not to move. However, the leverage that Zero had gained with his flexibility, combined with the suit's augmented strength, would have been enough to topple him.

Subject Zero identified. Executing data draw of suit specifications.
...
Data draw complete.

Scyntor brought the dual sabers around and into a cross-guard, the electonically amplified voice of the Colonel-General ringing across the battlefield as stormtroopers fell beneath hailstorms of simulated blasterfire. "Necessary, perhaps not, but there is no better gauge of capability than such a situation. I was chosen to be Colonel-General because of unorthodox tactics, and as a result I am the master Imperial strategist. This test was simply to see how you would respond to various situations I put before you, to accurately judge your capabilities."

Scyntor half-turned, a built-in blaster cannon erupting from his right shoulder and following his visual tracking to eliminate a Phase II Dark Trooper that was attempting to train fire on his own armor. The Dark Trooper had been seriously injured in the fight to gain the upper hand, so those last rounds of blasterfire were enough to take it down. "As for this fight, Zero, this is personal. My judgement has already been made."

Tactical Overview: Subject will attempt to eliminate armor using blades. Subject's exoskeletal armor lacks sufficient EM Shielding. Access port Alpha-Omega 439 best suitable location for electromagnetic discharge.

Scyntor made a mental note to rectify that problem in future overhauls of Zero's armor even as the rocket-assisted Phase III Dark Trooper armor launched forward with speed enough to give even Zero's enhanced reflexes a challenge. The blade swung parallel to one another, the sacrospinal servomotors whining their protest at the suden change in momentum as he swung at Zero's left side, under his arm.

Emergency Acceleration, Activated

Damn, too close... Again Zero had responded, dodging in a spin backwards with his arms extended, insuring no simulated loss of limb. However, the blade had left a very real chink in the left side of his chest plating. That wasn't good, he was lucky it hadn't damaged any of the access ports. Scyntor was being truthful, this was personal. He wanted a pure rematch, Zero would give it too him.

Z-Buster Still Not Found...

Shut up with this Z-Buster crap, already..., he thought, spotting something beyond Scyntor he thought would be more useful then the suit's recommendations. He made a dash for it, using superior speed to knock Scyntor's two blades away from his person as he leapt, unleashing a barrage of heavy blaster fire into Scyntor's faceplate as he flipped, to prove what could have happened had Scyntor not worn the suit. Landing in a run, he let the sensors worry about Scyntor giving chase as he leapt into the air again; landing on the roff of one of Scyntor's AT-STs.

Tearing open the hatch with his augmented strength, Zero grabbed a trooper in each hand and dumped them out. The would survive the fall, if not in a deal of pain come morning. Sliding into the cokpit, he grabbed the controls. Taking control of the twin chin blasters, he leveled them at Scyntor.

Warning....

" Kiss my ass," Zero said, knowing the suit could not respond as it was not a full AI. Straightening his aim, he opened fire with the walker's blasters into Scyntor's area.

Enemy tactics have changed. Heuristic algorithms compensating.
Compensation complete.
Tactical Overview: AT-ST walker mech identified. Heavy armor. Heavy guns. Suggest cou--

The hail of cannonfire from the walker wrenched Scyntor's attention away from the heads-up display in a leaping dive. Not that the Colonel-General needed the tactical suggestions: He had viewed the technical specifications of the mech during his initial days in the position, finally viewing the classified blueprints for the first time. OF course, it didn't take an engineer to know where the weakest point was: the damned teddy bears on Endor had made them abundantly clear.

Scyntor snapped his wrist back while speaking an activation command, and the rocketpacks of the suit flared into action. The augmented servomotors whined their protest as he ran across the ground, narrowly remaining ahead of the trail of fire. Finally, a single leap brought him under the angle of depression of the guns, leaving him in the clear. The suit's arms extended, then suddenly exploded with heavy durasteel cables. The harpoon tips overshot the knees of the mech, only to snap around and secure the heavy joints.

The Phrik suit continued forward, and the Colonel-General torqued in midair to allow him to face the back of the AT-ST. The vector adjustment thrusters compensated to allow him to continue his reverse direction, drawing the heavy wires taut... and a grim smile crossed his lips. The amplified auditory sensors picked up the groan of durasteel before the visual sensors registered the changed. The suit landed, and activating the internal inertial dampers he rooted himself to the spot and hauled with as much force as the servomotors could muster.

The wire sheared through the heavy joints of the AT-ST's walker legs cleanly, leaving it suspended in midair for a moment before crashing down in a pile of metal. The cables snapped back into their housings on his forearms as he paced forward, waiting for Zero to exit. His voice called out over the dying battlefield, the sounds and statistics of battle dwindling with each passing second. "A nice attempt, Zero, however I believe you need to research your mechanical specifications a little more... someone could get hurt." A sardonic chuckle passed his lips, through the vocal amplifiers as he began to lock on the access hatch of the walker's head.

Zero let out a primal roar as Scytnor rocketed towards the AT-ST. He never let up on the firing switch for the chin cannons; despite the fact that Scyntor stayed barely ahead of the hail of fire. " Fall you son of a bitch! Just fall!" Then, things became a blur. Dual harpoon cables launched from Scyntor's wrists, setting themselves into the buildings on either side of them. Then, he brought them against the legs and Zero desperately tried to keep the walker steady. Before he knew it, there was the terrible crunch of metal snapping, and his world came tumbling down.

There was an audible hiss as the suit forcibly blew the heavy blaster off of it's wrist couplings. Zero's head spun as the CPU adjusted the processors and oriented his vision for him. His armor was cracked in many places, far too many to his liking. Something metallic and larg jutted through the cockpit of the fallen walker. It was the upper left leg of the machine, disjointed in the fall. The tactic had failed, Zero knew he had to level the playing field, fast.

Cocky bastard... He still had a chance, Zero knew he could win this; and he knew how he was going to do it. Grabbing end of the dismembered upper leg, his enhanced strength allowed him to swing it like a club, ripping open the cockpit of the walker. Staring down Scyntor, Zero grinned fiercly. " Oh yes, I agree....someone could get hurt!", Zero shouted, slamming his improvised club into the side of the armored Colonel-General.

Heuristic Algorighms compensating
Compensation complete
Advise maintaining distance from club

Oh realy? Thanks for the warning... idiot.

Scyntor jumped away just as the length of durasteel whipped by, narrowly missing his form. An idea came to him... if the suit Zero wore was able to augment his strength enough to swing that much durasteel like a club, perhaps his would too. Jumping forward, he barely avoided the backhanded strike, which whipped through to dislodge the head of the walker from the upper left leg. The resulting impact showered sparks across the ground, and left the walker leg hanging by a couple of hydraulic cables and electrical conduit.

Perfect.

Scyntor landed on top of the hulk, ducking underneath another savage swing from Zero and to the ground. His manual servomotors gripped the twisted joint, and wrenched the upper leg free As the shriek of metal against metal resounded in his ears, an odd thought crossed his head. A song, one he had not heard in several years... from his days in early childhood in front of game systems. An evil smile followed by a matching cackle reverberated from the vocal enhancors before he spoke. "Initiate sound file Omega-01"

Battle Theme: Sarin, Katayoku no Tenshi (One-Winged Angel, heavy metal Advent Children remix), composed and arranged by Nobuo Uematsu

Scyntor spun the leg over his head as he dropped to a crouch, the suit systems compensating and pouring power into the servomotors and intertial dampers. The orchestral strains filled the silent battlefield before he launched forward, the jetpacks assisting his speed as he swung the club at Zero's head.

Noli manere, Manere in memoria...

What the hell....? Zero wasn't sure of Scyntor's intentions by playibng music, especially with his augmented hearing. Perhaps it was a distraction tactic, or maybe Scyntor simply felt the need for some battle music. An interesting observation, that Scyntor might be musically inclined. Especially considering how spartan the man's office had been. However, this was not the time for speculation. Scyntor had so far, effectively countered every one of Zero's attacks. There had to be a way to turn that armor against the man. That was the beauty of Zero's armor, the plating could be removed, it was the undersuit that held the processors. There had to be a way... " Analyze..."

Right..., Zero thought, parrying Scyntor's strikes and trying to plan a move that could decide the battle. It came to him and Zero cross referenced the maneuver with the CPU. It was a valid tactic, though the suit protested Zero not using it's exact tactics. Kicking off with his left foot, Zero launched forward. Moving into a 360 degree spin, Zero swung the leg halfway through, swatting away Scyntor's. That would give him the opprotunity. Using the superior agilty of his own armor; and the enhanced strength in place of servomotors and inertial dampers. Completing the spin, the maneuver had taken less then a second, Zero brought his improvised club to bear on Scyntor's jetpack, satisfied with the sound of damage being dealt.

System damage critical, jettisoning dorsal jet packs

A growl issued from Scyntor's lips at the blow. The man was talented... very talented, and it was not going to bode well now that the only thing keeping their agility similarly on par with one another was gone. Using the augmented strength of the exoskeleton he swung the improvised club hard, the resulting impact with Zero's own sending an unsettling reverberation down its length, giving the Colonel-General enough time to jump away, give him some time to regroup.

"Reinforce inertial dampers, show overview of forces." The heads-up display flickered, and showed isolated squads of his stormtroopers rounding up enemy troops in specific locations, as well as a dozen small black blips that Scyntor immediately recognized, and brought a smile to his lips. "All remaining members of Legion Mu, abandon mission and regroup at my location." The blips started moving towards the small marker that indicated his own location, and with another grin the Colonel-General moved to the offensive once more.

Saevam iram, iram et dolorem

The walker legs clashed against one another as Scyntor remained rooted in virtually one place, turning to face Zero as the xenos' superior maneuverability let him duck and wheel, trying to find an exposure in Scyntor's defense. Both men had sustained heavy damage to their exoskeletal armors, but they were still out for one another's blood.

Zero dodged and parried one strike after another. This was easily the strangest battle he thought could ever take place. Two armored combatants, fighting with walker legs, of all things. It was definitely taking it's toll, as well. Every blow, every maneuver, was costing him energy with the damage his suit had taken. Every time he had to move to an extreme. Every time the improvised clubs clashed against each other. He lost another system, lost more of his processes.

Warning: Left Wrist Blaster Compromised...

Ejecting Left Wrist Blaster...

With a hiss, the blaster shot off of his left gauntlet. Zero cursed silently, why was the suit leaking so much energy? They'd have to fix that...

Warning: Auxillary Sensors Offline...

All Sensors For Activity Out Of Line Of Sight Are Oflline...

" Crap.....", Zero muttered, locking his weapon with Scyntor's. He had to make a push, had to end this before his entire suit went offline. With a roar and using every ounce of enhanced strength, he thrust his leg forward. In one strike, he knocked away Scyntor's weapon, out of his hands. In the second strike, he knocked the faceplate off of Scyntor's armor. With the third, he lowered the leg and rushed forward, pinning the Colonel- General to a wall. Pushing against the leg to hold Scyntor in place, he drew his saber and held the blade to the larger man's now exposed neck. " Yield...... this battle is mine..."

Scyntor was stunned. Zero, when he was fully operation, had bested the Colonel-General in hand-to-hand single combat. The inertial dampers were balanced perfectly with the xenos' strength augmentations, and the battle computer interface was perfectly designed for him. Perhaps this duel between warriors was doomed from the start.

However, the last view Scyntor had before the faceplate was knocked from him left no doubt as to the victor, so when Zero issued his demands for surrender Thenates only smiled. A moment of silence, then the Colonel-General leaned in, the vibroblade a scant centimeter from his skin as he met the others eyes in a lock that would freeze the being to his bones. "I believe, Zero... that I will be accepting your surrender."

The scuttle of priming mechanisms resounded behind the opposing commander, the sound of a dozen Phase II Dark Troopers readying their guns, all twelve aiming at a different locale that left Scyntor out of their line of fire but put Zero in the nexus of a web of blaster-aim. Scyntor waited patiently as Zero's armor processed the surprise, but his voice continued.

"While I admire your physical prowess, Zero, you still have to remember that you have other issues outside of personal vendettas. This is my final lesson to you: Never loose sight of your objective." Another moment passed, then Scyntor calmly reached out and pushed Zero's wrist aside, standing up in the Phase III armor. He pressed an emergency beacon, and within a moment an engineering tank arrived to take the armor away, to be repaired.

Scyntor turned towards one of his Acclamators, setting down on the ground to transport him back to the administrative complex, then paused and turned back to Zero. "Remember what you have learned here today, and it will serve you well..." The Colonel-General reached into his pocket and removed a small case, running his fingers over the burnished metal surface before tossing it towards Zero. He waited until the xenos opened ot to view what was within before smiling.

"Account for your troops and dismiss them to quarters, then file your report on the battle. I expect to see it on my desk by 1900 hours... General Zero."
