I say once again:

Star Wars: Making sense not required.

You know what? I'm just going to put a variation of that in my signature.

All an ion cannon is is an electric pulse that somehow can be directed to hit something. Really. Heavy metal shielding can reduce its effectiveness, but they pass through shields. That's pretty much the middle-of-the-road, and most logical, explanation.

Take a small computer fan designed for 12v. Apply 24 volts to it. The windings will fry. That's what an ion cannon effectively does. It overloads the system, destroying capacitors and frying things like resistors. Due to the nature of electronics it spreads through the system as far as it can effectively. Auxiliary systems and primary systems can be kept separate, and that's why one may work while the other may not.

Thats what I was saying, I mean when you factor in supplies needed to maintain something of Akula size would cost quite a penny during a battle.

But, hey, thats why I asked if there was a difference and apparently their isn't, an EMP and an Ion are the same, the only difference is an Ion would be more direct and focused. So... would it really only take minutes to repair the main systems? :P

Perhaps your terminology isn't quite correct. It isn't really repair. It's jury rigging to bring them back online long enough to last the battle. At least, that's how I think of it.

And also an ion blast could probably be classified as an EMP, but it isn't exactly the same. It's more of an electrical discharge, though it has the same effect as an EMP virtually. Unlike an EMP, however, it isn't an area-of-effect weapon. It's focused and spreads.

Would it wipe system information away, such as how to get home or programs for vital systems?

That depends on the storage method. Electrical discharge wouldn't effect a hard disk in terms of what you would normally think as data erasing (and I believe hard drives are actually still used in SW), though it could trigger the R/W head to do some crazy crap to it. Storage in which capacitors store energy permanently (flash drives) would be susceptible. Why do you ask?

Well I started thinking about Alex's question about how it would effect his robot. It would be interesting, I thought, to know the effects of such a weapon on a ship, considering it always seems like a hit by an Ion Cannon is a mute point. I mean what kind of story would unfold if say the Empire sent a huge fleet half way across the galaxy and suddenly find themselves caught in a huge battle and after it their entire fleet unable to get home because they don't know where it is. :P

Uhh, Brote, for it to work would require massive amounts of energy. Don't plan on it. :p

Also, another mod... we're scrapping most of the Earth language associations. Humans just speak Basic. Mantellian is excepted because it's some sort of code language. Thanagarian is also excepted because I said so. :p

No, we originally had some elaborate setup assigned Earth languages and cultures to various planets... and it's stupid. :p

So your saying that all humans and species need to communicate in Basic?

In SW, paper is paper. Paper and Flimisplast are utterly different.

Um, Ams, could you watch the language please? I enjoy a dirty joke as much as the next twisted pervert, but it's out of hand. We're an RPG, not a smut forum.
