Weeks past the incident at Northwater.

“Ladies and gentlemen of science and technology, and to those associated with our colleagues of such,” Adolph Antario said solemnly to the private group invited to the funeral, “There is no need to run over what has already passed. The appalling incident at Northwater has taken 294 of our collaborator’s lives in the time span of less than a week. The most horrific element of this is the fact that nearly all of the deaths were not related to the initial singularity-detonation reaction, but rather succumbing to released Savorium and Palpitinium and dying of radiation poisoning. Despite our best efforts at distillation of the isotope and even with access to the some of the best medical equipment and technicians, ninety percent of those who were saved from the initial explosion and aftermath died of radiation poisoning. Our own creation, Savorium-391, was the death of many of our finest scientists.

For that, I’d like to mention some associates that without their intervention; Devaron would not be the same:

Julia Brooke Wentsworth, our former bio-sector-two lead biologist and overseer of the bio-sector-two greenhouse. Julia took it upon herself to close the blast doors between the eastern and western regions of Northwater, saving countless lives…

… Julia died of Savorium-induced anaplastic thyroid cancer two days after the incident.

Rory Oahl Naberezkyni, former assistant to physicist Dranil Adrian, died in the tertiary explosion within the Palpitinium research laboratories. If Rory hadn’t had taken the initiative and sent the first-warning signs, the explosion would have pierced the blast domes and much more civilian lives would be at risk of Savorium infectivity. Unfortunately, he was unable to activate containment shields for his own laboratory in time, and was taken by the detonation.”

Adolph coughed, “Derrick Mitchell Davidson.”

Several people in the assemblage looked up quickly, a mask of sudden grief painted on their faces.

“Our own Derrick was taken in the catastrophe. At the time of the explosion, Derrick was in the northern area of Northwater, speaking his fiancée in Recreation Room 16. As many of us know, Derrick Davidson was our finest bioengineer for the agriculture laboratories, and many of us are recognizable with him because of his revolutionization of the ‘fast’ crop industry.

When the explosion occurred, Derrick headed towards the anomalous materials division to see what had occurred. Even when colleague and coworker told him to turn and flee, Derrick ventured into the hot-zone and rescued a stranded party of eight. Three of those eight still live. Derrick died three days later in the Devaron Advanced Institution of Health and Medicine of a malignant tumor in near his lung, also caused by near-fatal doses of Savorium-391.

These are select cases of selflessness and bravery in a mass relief effort after this disaster. Many a person took it upon themselves to put aside personal danger and work for the good of the people. Without these cases of self-sacrifice, this disaster would have been of much larger proportions. This entire incident has affected us all down to our very core. The field of science on this planet will ever have a shadow of death upon its back.”
