I was recently playing Battlefront II on my new 360 :D, on the Mygeeto level. I had gotten the crystals and was running back to the dropship to end the level. However, my fun meter wasn’t dry yet so when I reached the bridge where the trio of droidekas roll out, instead of blowing right past them, I decided to take them on with my rifle. I pulled it out and took down one of them before the last one got me and forced me to respawn and run to the spot where I had dropped the crystal. What I found was pure and total chaos. Four droidekas, eight battle droids, and an AAT were engaging ten clone troopers of various types along with a walker. It took me three tries to wade through the chaos, grab the crystal, and make it back to the dropship. As the level was playing the victory song, I had a thought. What would a real (Literately speaking, of course) 501st trooper have done in my position? Stay and fight with his brothers, or abandon them and follow orders?

I decided to make a short fan fiction on it. I love the Clone Wars, and I’ve played (And beaten) BFII several times, so I think that it should turn out pretty good. I’ll post the chapters in various installments, so just be patient. ;)

Here we go!

Chapter One
Duty and Sacrifice

CT-0307/8206 held on firmly to the overhead ceiling grip inside the bay of the LAAT/i, or ‘larty’ as most clones preferred to call them. His DC-15 was strapped to his chest by his combat harness, and his arsenal of thermal detonators hung at his belt. Beside him, the other five members of his squad stood in their blue and white armor, looking for the entire galaxy like droids. 307, or ‘Tray’ as his brothers called him, clicked his comm at the pilot to get his attention. “How much farther to the LZ?” he asked.

“About half a klick, sir. Opening doors. Stand by.” The gunship’s doors slid open with a slight click, and the craft bucked as a nearby AA shell detonated off to their starboard side. Tray could see the battle zone nearly a kilometer below. Droid armor and infantry units clashed with Republic forces of equal strength. Starfighters looped in dozens of separate dogfights, leaving ion trails that were clogging the larty’s sensors.

All in all, a day in the life of the 501st Legion.

“Closing on LZ,” The pilot announced. “Prepare for a rough landing.” Tray’s grip on the handlebar tightened as the gunship shook. An ARC-170 rose into view to their right, its pilot giving them a thumbs up. The tail gunner suddenly began firing at something out of Tray’s sight. A return bolt caught the craft on the port wing, sending it into a spiral towards the ruined city below.

"Gra’tua cuun hett su dralshy’a," Tray muttered. Our vengeance burns brighter still.

The gunship touched down ten meters from the forward CP as the battle raged on around them. “Go, go, go!” Tray shouted to his squad. They hit the dirt running and opened up on a pair of super battle droids advancing on the gunship. Tray’s stomach sank. If the droids were this far up already, then things were worse than they’d feared. He shouldered his Deece and blasted one of the supers, then rolled and came up behind the wreckage of an AT-RT. Priming one of his ECDs, he shouted into the squad comm “Fire in the hole!” waited two seconds, then threw. The detonator bounced off of the remaining SBD’s head and landed between a trio of battle droids. They stared at it for about half a second before tendrils of electricity knocked them senseless. Tray’s squad efficiently mopped them up.

A Lieutenant, the yellow stripes on his armor identifying him as a trooper from the 7th Legion, jogged up to them. “Thanks for your assistance, Sergeant. Without your help, there’s no telling what kind of damage those droids could have done before we had realized that they had penetrated our lines.”

Ah. So the CP wasn’t overrun after all. Tray saluted. “My pleasure, Lieutenant. Sergeant 0307/8206 of Squad Three, 501st Legion, reporting for duty.”

The Lieutenant returned Tray’s salute and looked around. “Are you the only reinforcements arriving, Sergeant?”

“No, sir. Four platoons have arrived straight off the Intrepid, as well as a wing of fighters and gunships, all loaded with supplies and ammunition.”

The LT nodded and pressed his first two fingers to the side of his helmet to activate his comlink. “General, reinforcements from the 501st have arrived. Do you have any orders for them?” He was silent for a moment, then nodded again. “Very good sir. Right away.” Jerking his head towards the CP, he spoke to Tray. “General Mundi wants to see you at the forward command post, pronto.”

Tray nodded and started forward. A concussion missile exploded not fifty meters above them, and he twitched slightly. The Kaminoans could brag about their training all they wanted. Nothing, not even two and a half years of fighting, prepared a man for such a ravaged battlefield.

Chapter Two
Hearts and Minds

General Mundi was leaning over the shoulder of a Rodian technician when Tray and his squad arrived at the FCP. It was a reinforced bunker guarded by three squads of troopers and a pair of AT-RTs. Tray waited for General Mundi to turn around, then snapped off a salute. “General, sir. Sergeant 0307/8206 of Squad Three, 501st Legion.”

The General nodded solemnly as he surveyed Tray’s brothers. Their blue-white armor was scorched and pitted from the skirmish with the battle droids at the LZ, as well as from the battle in the northern hemisphere, but otherwise intact. The General looked back at Tray. “Where is the rest of your squad, Sergeant?” he asked. “Standard troop deployment is eight men per squad.”

Tray nodded. “They took a hit from an infantry-class thermal detonator, sir. Rimsoo Nine’s reported that they’ll be good to go in ten days.” After two and a half years to practice, Tray had gotten good at speaking of his wounded brothers with an indifferent tone. It still hurt, though.

Ki-Adi-Mundi gestured to the monitor behind him. “Our reinforcements from the 501st have arrived and are accounted for. ARC-170 wings Alpha and Beta have been strengthened, as well as our gunship squadrons. We’re ready for the final push on the main Separatist fortress to the north.”

A holomap appeared in the center of the room, showing a large area riddled with debris. In the center there was a large building where several dozen enemy droids were marked with little red dots A pair of bridges extended in front and behind of the structure, the former leading to an area where simulated gunships landed and deployed holographic soldiers, the latter leading to a tall, tower-like structure housing a large power generator. Ray shields blocked access to the power generator, and several more were set up on the paths surrounding the main building.

General Mundi began to lay out the plan of attack. “Gunship squadrons Theta and Gamma will be escorted by ARC-170 wing Alpha. Each gunship will be carrying two squads of troops to the landing zone. Once the gunships have deployed the troops, they will lay down suppressive fire on enemy positions as our troops and armor advance to this point-” A pulsating red dot appeared at the spot where the main area and the forward bridge connected. “-where we expect to meet the most resistance. By then their fighter squadrons will have engaged our gunships, so air support on both sides will be committed and unavailable for troop use.”

“Our force will fight its way to the main building and secure it as a rally point. When that has been done, Gunship squadrons Alpha, Beta, and Omega will land the remaining reinforcements and vehicles to help in a later phase of the battle.” The red dot split into three separate ones and indicated a trio of spots just behind each ray shield around the Separatist fortress. “These are the power generators for the energy shields. If our troops are to have armor support when moving to their actual objective, then they will need to be taken out.”

“The final part of the plan is simple-with the firepower of our division’s tanks and walkers, we will assault the Separatist’s power generator and destroy it. The CIS will almost undoubtedly foresee that and counter with their own armor, but we have leaked false intelligence through one of their spies concerning the strength of our armor. With luck, and the Force, they will have underestimated our firepower and will be outnumbered.”

Ki-Adi-Mundi paused, waiting for any objections to the plan. When none arose, he said, “Dismissed.”

Chapter Three
Onslaught

The gunship bucked as incoming AA fire exploded all around it. Tray grasped firmly to the handlebar and fought to keep his rations where they belonged. He listened absentmindedly to the comm channels between the gunships and their fighter escorts. “-still no sign of enemy fighter squadrons. When enemy anti-aircraft fire ceases, they will most likely attack. Stay sharp.”

“Yes sir.”

Tray switched back to the squad frequency as the larty drew close to the LZ. He could just make out the double barrels of the enemy AA guns. A little closer and he could see the blue armor of the droids manning them. He resisted the urge to snap up his Deece and fire, instead turning to Cal and giving his brother a slight nudge.“You okay, vode?”

Cal nodded. “Don’t worry about me, Sarge. I’m fine.”

“We’re approaching the landing zone,” the pilot announced. “Secure drop lines. Sensors show seven B1s in the immediate area of the LZ, so prepare for hard contact.”

“Roger that. Securing lines.” Tray snapped his line to his belt and pulled back the priming lever on his DC-15. The rest of his squad followed his lead, and five seconds later they were ready to go. “Dropping chaf bombs!” the pilot said. Invented by General Mundi’s scientists at the last minute, chaf bombs were highly ionized pieces of metal packed into a bomb containing an oversized equivalent of an ECD and a thermal detonator. When released, it exploded three meters above the ground, releasing the metal and spraying EMP emissions all over the blast radius, hopefully distracting enemy droids long enough for troops to land and take them out.

“Brace!” the pilot said as he launched the bombs. “Fire one, fire two. Packages released. Wait five, then go.” The bombs exploded, releasing their payloads, and suddenly Tray was flying through the air on his rappel line towards the ground. The line pulled taught and he landed solidly on his feet, rifle up and tracking the dazed droids. Three shots, and three droids were reduced to smoking piles of debris. Tray heard someone from Squad Nine confirm that all of the droids were down for the count, and relaxed slightly.

Suddenly he was hurled to the ground as something exploded above him. He rolled over and looked around wildly, but saw only a blazing fireball where their gunship had been moments earlier.

A fireball, and a pair of Vulture droids swooping in at his platoon.

“Cover!” he shouted into the helmet comm. He grabbed up his dropped rifle and sprinted for a large durasteel plate wedge into a nearby wall. He checked it as he passed-yes, it was starship-grade. Excellent cover. “Over here!”

Cal, Jumper, Tik, Matter, and Thumper fllowed his lead, crouching next to him. The rest of his platoon found similar pieces of cover, and waited for the droids’ first strafing run.

It came. Laser cannon fire rained down on their plate, heating it but not punching through it, and a few seconds later the droids screamed past them and looped around for another run. Tray activated the emergency frequency and began shouting. “Squad Three, Blue-One-Zero, Blue-One-Zero, Blue-One-Zero, over.”

“Copy that, Squad Three. Nova flight inbound, ETA fifteen seconds.”

“Estimated enemy strength two to four, repeat two to four Vulture droids. Be advised, enemy air strength is larger than intelligence suggests. Squads Three, Four, Nine, and Ten are groundside without our gunship, repeat negative extraction. Clear the skies around us and we’ll advance.”

“Roger that, Squad Three. ETA Three seconds.” A whine rose over the shriek of the Vulture Droid’s repulsors as they came around for a third pass on the trapped platoon of clone troopers. They were almost in range when one of them exploded in a ball of flame. The second one followed suit.

Through the flames roared a trio of ARC-170s in tight formation.

Tray smiled as he watched the other two Vulture droids scatter to avoid the double laser cannons of the clone fighters. They were partially successful. One fighter managed to evade the firestorm of laser cannon bolts, while the other one disappeared just as the other two had. The nose of the lead ARC-170 sprouted twin blue streaks, which homed in on the surviving Vulture droid and detonated it.

Tray stood up from cover and raised his fist to the friendly fighters. “Oya!” he shouted. “Oya, vode!”
